Playing online, moving OTB

Have you ever tried playing chess online but moving the pieces and thinking over an actual board? I just tried it and found it quite nice. It is the closest you can get to playing OTB while being alone at your house

SJFG

I do it during long games.

One thing though: If you're playing correspondence ("daily" or "online") chess, you may move the pieces around to analyze ahead, but if you're playing on live chess, you cannot analyze ahead on the real board.

It's cheating I tell you!  It's the use of an artificial aid during the game.  Oh wait, now I remember.  No one, including me, gives a sh#t as long as you don't (as SJFG pointed out) move the pieces around.  Nope, not going to start that argument again...Laughing

I am not speaking about analysing live, I am speaking about playing the game on an actual board (with touch-move rule, etc) and using the app just as a medium of communication between the two players.

SJFG

Yes, that's allowed I think.

I think they make boards that move the pieces in on programs when you move the piece on a board.

Yeah, some people think it's not allowed. As previously mentioned,  as long as you are not analyzing by moving pieces, then there is no rule prohibiting the use of a physical board for Live games.

It is legal, beyond all doubt. The topic of discussion is how good is it to get the feeling of a real board, and how much more fun is it.

I do it all the time even at 15mins. I use it as part of training for real otb play, keeping touch rule. Playing with an increment is better, epecially towards the endgame so as not to lose on time while making the moves. I then analyse the game afterwards.
