I agree it seems you dont get many points for being right but lose lots of points if your wrong
Point ratings during training

I'm not hung up on points or a high score as I'm new chess and just curious as to the mechanics of how scores are calculated based on correct or incorrect solutions to problems.

Tactics trainer rates your performance on the problem (not just success or failure, but the time you took) versus the average performance of others who have tried that problem, and scales that with your rating compared to the problem rating.
You can have very easy problems rated 1900, but the average time is 20 seconds. Similarly you can have difficult problems rated 1400, but it takes more than a minute. All the rating system is trying to do is continue to give you problems suited to how you've been performing.
I recommend to everyone that you turn off the timing bar, or at least hide it by resizing the window, and just look at the tactic until you see it. Go for % correct, not rating, and I think you'll learn a lot more. Also, if you get the problem correct, even if it took you 15 minutes, you still get 20% score, minimum. Better than missing it and getting 0.

Why during tactics training if I figure out a problem I'm awarded so few points if not just one. However, if I were to not figure out the same problem a lot of points are taken away. What's up with that?
