Prearranged draws?

How do you feel about pre-arranged draws? (a pre-arranged draw is a pre-planned game that the players have agreed to draw intentionally before the game has even started

I would be ok with that. I have never seen a chess rule that would disallow it.

I remember the time in our chess club where the head actually had to ban that since people literally arranged draws for all their games lol. They wanted to play bughouse :/

Well morally its wrong.

It's strictly prohibited in official rated play and can result in having the game forfeited and removal from a tournament. The problem is, it's hard to prove that it was prearranged in many cases.

There’s very little chess federations can do about it. There are certain lines in chess that are known draws, but FIDE can’t just ban certain openings. It is super lame, though, and is technically match-fixing.

I remember in the final round of the US Championship this year, So played Nakamura, and they played a known drawn line. A win or a loss by either player wouldn’t change their standings.

Still, they could’ve done something fun. Maybe a bong cloud or some weird opening to please the viewers, but no, they decided to be lame. Booooo.

could be many reasons....for example...you and your friend are playing in a tournament. If one of you lose , you might end up not advancing to the next round. But if you both get a draw , both of you will make it . So its logical to agree upon a pre planned draw.

Maybe chess players don't want to take hours playing a game they need to play tomorrow, so they decide to save time and energy.

I agree, I think pre-arranged draws are silly too.

The Soviets arranged draws all the time. They would beat all the other players and arrange draws amongst themselves so as not to lower their own scores. That way the weakest Soviet player wouldn’t have several losses so they could sweep all the top spots. Everyone knew they were doing it and Bobby Fischer called them out on it.

I think they're absurd.

But I'm not a professional player, with real money on the line. Perhaps if I were, my feelings about the practice might be different.

They could introduce a rule that you can’t offer a draw before say 15 moves have been played

Well there are "grandmaster draws"

Yeah, it has another unfair aspect to it too. The long tournaments are exhausting and if you have prearranged draws their players remain fresher, expend less mental energy.

It makes no difference.

at 3:00 (or 3:40 to skip the intro) Grishuk is very funny talking about the Chinese team where there is both a 30 move and 1 hour draw rule that does not seem to stop the phenomenom

Well, this is an absurd suggestion on my part, but maybe... duh duh duh...they should BUG the player's rooms in high-stakes tournaments so they can hear if they arrange draws.

They may arrange it somewhere else

RadCharizard01
