I'd of thought for Online and Live tournaments here, that clothing was optional.

I'm in suits and bow ties daily for work, as well as the weekends for church, so I'd likely be in a suit and bow tie.
You could have males wearing Corporal Klinger outfits and I wouldn't care, as long as the person has recently had a bath or shower. Sadly, that bar is even too high for some.
The days of suit and tie chess are gone. Deal with it ;).
Tying dress to social status and personal character is an antiquated notion at best...
...and, if I were a TD I would kick Topalov below out on his ear for wearing something like that.
well, the shirt and tie combination that Topalov chose is very distracting.
I think for world championships, and maybe some other premier super GM tournaments, suits are required.
In your average every day tournament, cargo shorts are dressing up.
Looking at that guy too long will wreck your retinas! I'm more along the lines of navy blue or dark grey suits, starched white shirts, and bow ties in navy blue or lowkey colors.

Topalov is highly skilled in his own right, he doesn't need to rely on non-chess gimmicks. I think he just likes the style.
Whenever I play in tournaments I wear the same thing I would wear when I go outside for school. Also it's critical to bring a sweatshirt as the tournament halls are often too cold.
Some years ago when I was at the World Open in Philly; I saw some GMs in the bar after rounds. One looked like a hobo that had just rolled off the train and the other was a verbal thug. Mind you, most others were well behaved & shaved. But these two did not represent in a favorable manner. So, it rolls down from the top.
Some of the best players are very shabby in attire. Chess is not just a rich white persons game. It can be played well by any person of any class. Attire usually is representative of a player's social class, not their playing skill.

why would all rich white people be dressed good? ofc i would if i were rich, but you know rich white people do whatever they want. they know they are the boss however they dress, they get everything they want however they dress.
Shower, shave, brush your teeth, and wear clean clothes. I'm good with that.
Shave?! Fascist.
lol
I'd be interested in knowing what you think about the proper attire for OTB tournaments. Seems to me that many players, including GM's, dress like slobs rather than attempting to properly represent themselves and/or their country in terms of their attire and personal hygiene. For example, Is this GM's attire and personal presentation positive or negative for the game as a result of his attire?
