How important is the concept of prophylaxis at the intermediate level, and how can we apply it in practical games?

Prophylaxis is one of the most important skills to understand at all levels. I would say you usually apply it when you are up on material, or just have a better position. Allowing your opponent to get counter play will make the game way too complicated.

Look at players like Karpov or Petrosian, they constantly used prophylaxis in their games, and only when their opponents had no chance of an attack, then they go in for the kill.

@DrMonther92 I believe it is important, but not necessarily as much as at the higher levels like titled players. It's still really useful though.

I have a FIDE rating of 1650 and it's the first time I hear that word

During your opponent’s turn, ask: “If I were them, what would I play?”

I agree, I feel like if the average player did that regularly in their games, they could get 100+ elo.
