Puzzle rating of 1800 question....

So, I recently got a puzzle rating of 1800. I know this is a stupid question, but does this mean you are an intermediate player?

Puzzle rating has little to do with playing strength.

If I may inquire, what does that mean...?

It means that people are usually better at solving puzzles when they know there is something there, so the rating gained is going to be elevated over playing ratings.

Also, puzzles give a minimum rating gain, if solved correctly, regardless of how much time is taken, so that can potentially inflate things.

Take me for an example, my highest tactics rating was 2691. I'm a 1600's OTB player and there's no way that tactics rating is any indication of my playing strength.

With puzzles, you KNOW that a winning move exists in the position, and your task is to find it. This is purely a question of tactics.

In an actual game, your task is to bring about positions in which a winning advantage exists. This is a question of strategy and maneuver. Then you must stay on watch for a winning tactical shot. This requires situational awareness and alertness. Tactics happens last of all.

Puzzles and actual games require different skill sets. It's like building a boat vs sailing a boat. Different skills, and someone who is good at one might be hopeless at the other.

Thank you for the answer!

To be an intermediate player you have to reach certain rating and puzzle rating has nothing to do with it. Lots of people here have high puzzle rating but lack some opening/positional/endgame knowledge and because of that they stagnate at certain level. I have the opposite problem. I'm 1700 in rapid but my puzzle rating is just 300-400 points higher. I have seen many people with higher puzzle rating but lower in any format.

It does not depend on what your rating is... The only thing that depends is how you play your move, think of the opponent's move, and find a checkmate in either 1,2,3. If you have reached the 1800 Elo rating in the puzzle, you can calculate and predict the opponent's move and may even find the best or most brilliant move.
