Queen + Rook = more than 50 moves?

i heard rumors that a K+Q vs. K+R can be won, but that modern computing has pushed that number past 50 moves in some cases. anyone know more on this?

Hmmm, maybe someone with the well known nalimov tablebases could try to perform some tests...

I think it is a draw, provided K+R player is carefull enough not to be forked. I think

King and Rook should keep on opposite color squares and there will be no fork then.

i just ended a game--Q vs. R--that took 63 moves.

it ended in a draw.

No, king plus queen against king and rook is always a win, provided the rook side can't immediately draw (take queen, get stalemate etc.). It's hard, but it's certainly doable.

And I'm not sure how many moves it takes. The 50-move rule is pretty harsh in that sense, that even if the queen side can win the rook on move 51, if he didn't win the rook in 50 moves the rook side can claim a draw.

The longest distance to mate in the ending K+Q v K+R is 35 moves.  These four positions are all Mate in 35.  These facts were ascertained from Nalimov Tablebases.  Practical play is another matter.  Svidler failed to win a QvR ending v Gelfand.  Browne was tested v Ken Thompson's database and failed the first time.  Browne went away to study and succeeded the second time.

aha! i did a little googling and it turns out that in 1982 FIDE changed the rule to be more than 50 moves because of this, but is was later changed BACK when more powerful computers were able to solve every position in less than 50 :) so i was half right :)

Oops, I can't see your examples, Ghostofmaroczy. I click the arrows but pieces don't move.

erik--what do you mean "solve every position"?

Eugen--I did not provide the move sequences.  I only provided the diagrams.

Tablebases can be accessed online at:

by every position i mean every possible K+Q vs. K+R starting position :)

The rule is harsh. A draw should be adjudicated!
