Queen trade?

There are many games where two queens are taken . Is there any other reason for this action other than the constant loosing of power of opposite team?

I trade queens for many reasons:

  • it is my best move in the position as any other move is losing
  • I am up material and want to trade into a winning endgame position
  • in the opening; where I can force the king out to the open d-file so that it cannot castle
  • it slows down or stops a serious threat or attack

I rarely do it  because I don't like seeing my queen go, but then again if the other queen is gone too, I don't mind so much.  I mainly do it so there is one less piece to worry about.

How about you?

Dekna

If you like using your queen and plan on using her, it would probably be best to avoid a trade, here is a game I have played where I used my queen quite a lot and planned to use her, but traded her because I was going to be up in material, remember, its always better to trade pieces when YOUR up in material, unless of course you see a mate ahead.

Trade queens when the result gives you a stronger position, except when you are down material.

I feel like one of my big weaknesses is an aversion to even calculating many lines with queen trades in them. I don't feel like I'm good enough positionally to trade off queens and maintain as big an advantage with minor pieces unless it leads to an immediately winning endgame.

Personally I do not use my queen that often and really only use it for a queen trade. I dislike queens because i feel like more tactics are used without one.

I like when a player appears overly dependant on the Queen to take away the Queen using my own if necessary. Often It is a good strategy, making the game more tactical.

I'll do it if I find a way to attack the opponents queen while he has my queen under attack.

I tend to simplify if I'm in time trouble or if I'm playing a lesser-rated opponent and can enter into an easy endgame (usually rook & pawn)

I like to trade Queens because I have learned that some people are handicapped without their Queen. I have spent some time learning to play without her so I believe that I will have the advantage. I'm playing a game now with my brother in law (which I have never beaten). I traded Queens with him about move 4 or 5 and he is in deep trouble. I should've tried this sooner. He is one of those people who wait for you to castle, then he jumps in and wins. Not this time... LOL!

Many players rely strongly on the queen, if you take it away, even trade, they fall apart. I'll trade any time I can just for the practice.

I only do so in the opening to force him/her to withdraw his King's knight or disable his/her castling capabilities. Otherwise, I hold on to it until the endgame.
