Question of the Week 4: Anti-Cheating Measures

Well, the Candidates is one of the most prestigious tournaments held, so I think that's totally fine. I mean do you think making metal detectors standard at national tournaments or just any tournament offering GM norms is ok?

I think if it’s a big super-GM tournament like the candidates, it is fine. Also if it a high stake national tournament or a tournament with multiple thousand dollar prize money, it is fine.

There have been cases where the cheaters have gotten their titles taken away, or banned from playing from that organization (USCF or FIDE)

Oh yes, fines should be implemented in less severe cases. CCA (Continental Chess Association) has done that for not requesting a bye, but they should do it for cheating.

the OTB precautions might be too much.
For example, who can afford to add metal detectors at the bathrooms? think about that extra cost! and even if it's just those portable ones that can manually scan, people who regularly use the building to work might find it inconvenient, they go to use the bathroom and they take their cellphone to answer emails/texts, and the TD's come and take away his/her phone because of cheating. i don't think that it is fair for the workers to have to face an inconvenience for having to do their job. i think everything could just stay as is.
and also, think about the TD's. they might want to do other things, but they have to come help to prevent cheating on the top boards. i don't think that's fair to the TD.
these are just my thoughts.
Hmmmm, I was thinking if USCF really wanted to discourage cheating, they would help fund metal detectors. I agree with you with the TD's though.

Well, watching to prevent cheating is just part of a TD’s job. If the TD has several assistants, they could watch for cheating, while the TD runs the tourney

If you cheat in a tournament that has prize money involved and you get convicted of cheating then it becomes fraud which is a criminal offence which would deter most cheaters. I would say metal detectors are too over the top as unless they are national open tournaments or big tournaments it would just be a hassle to install them.
Yeah, makes sense. Although many people cheat even though there are such serious penalties.

I don't think any discussions about cheating are allowed on the public forums, but this might be a good topic to bring to the club chess.com/club/cheating-forum.

Good point. How has this topic not been locked yet. Maybe because dit isn’t a discussion about cheating on chess.com. It is a discussion about cheating OTB
This week's question of the week is: How far do you think tournament organizers should go in terms of anti-cheating measures to prevent/discourage cheating? Answer for both OTB tournaments as well as online games.
I'll start us off:
OTB: In OTB chess, cheating is definitely a thing. People who want to win prize money or grab a National Title will sometimes throw away their moral values in exchange for the awesome reward. I think that for normal games at like a local club that are rather insignificant, nothing needs to really be done. As long as the director is alert, that's fine. However, it you get to International tournaments, or National tournaments, or tournaments with large prize rewards, I think we need the following:
1. Metal detectors (if a title such as "National First Place K-6 Champion" is on the line)
- At the doors, and at bathroom entrances
2. 1-3 extra tournament directors to monitor player behavior for top boards (boards 1-10)
Basically, if a title or large prize money is on the line, people need to be kept in check. People are greedy by nature, and we need to make sure those who earn first place thoroughly deserve it.
Online Chess: I believe PNWCC has done a great job monitoring online chess players in their tournaments (you can find them at uschesshub.com). They require 2 cameras: One showing your face, and one showing your entire body + computer (or device). If your cameras don't satisfy them, they won't start your game. I think all online tournaments should have these requirements. PNWCC also requires people to share their screen, further reducing any possibility of cheating.
While we can try our best to discourage cheating, I think personal privacy should still be valued. For instance, no following people into the bathroom. Just have security cameras, and only pull footage if there's an accusation. What do you guys think? Let me know!
