"Spite Checks" Too Harsh a Phrase?

Do you like to give "spite checks" before you resign?  Do you consider this rude?  Also is the phrase too harsh?  Maybe we could soften it a little by using a phrase that is not so strong like "frustration checks".

Surely the leader of genocidal wars in the 21st century does not really worry about rudeness...Laughing

Bereng

I think it's an appropriate phrase, it's rude I'd reckon, and while I don't give such checks I often go for a last ditch attack before I resign, lobbing pieces toward the enemy king hoping (futilely) for something.

Let's not get personal.Sealed  Even the most ruthless dictators through the ages have been extremely generous to their friends as well as their pets.

History often exagerates.

Shouldn't that be Colonel Green (no e on the end)?

I see no point of "Spite checks".

If it is truly an check that may have a purpose (such as a last ditch effort, perhaps in hopes of your opponent blundering) then perhaps.

But to just give an annoying check because you can? Pointless and rude.

Maddolis

I see no issue with it in blitz.

I would only do spite checks if my opponent said something like "mate in 3" when it's really a mate in 5 because of the spite checks.

ETA: I agree with the above post that they can also make sense when your opponent is extremely low on time such as in blitz or bullet.

What's a spite check?

waffllemaster

As long as you make things clear in chat while you're doing it...

"To the last, I grapple with thee; From Hell's heart, I stab at thee; For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee."

(How's that for too harsh? Laughing)

A check that does nothing but stall a game.

varelse1

There are two kinds of checks: Productive ones, and counter-productive ones. (Same as any other move)

They are called spite checks if they are the latter.

@Waffle's spit check sounds like lots more fun.

i do not like to give spite checks before i resign (always check it might be mate), i'd rather play with logic and try to contruct a realistic attack that gives me practical chances involving everything i can throw at my opponents king. i don't consider spite checks to be rude the only people who consider this rude are people who are butthurt that they managed to lose this way in winning positions. To be honest the term spite checks could not be any less harsh i really don't see what makes it harsh, what makes a phrase harsh?

waffllemaster

The saying "patzer sees check, patzer gives check" is harsher.

AnOmalimusicofficial

Usually people only give spite checks if its hopeless to win a game so it usually doesn't bother me. Spite checks usually don't change anything anyway.

clunney

When your 2 rooks and queen are about to mate him, and he, having only one bishop left over, conjures up all of his hatred of you to deliver one last check before he is finally mated.... That is a true spite check :p

DrFrank124c

Even if you are about to resign it pays to check your opponent if you can because he might panic and blunder. There is no limit to the stupidity that the human mind is capable of!

toiyabe

What is harsh about the phrase spite check?  I would prefer the phrase, "F*** OFF AND DIE check".

ebillgo

I came across the term " spite check "  in the book Total Chess by David Spanier. I think he also mentioned something like "shame-mate " or "sham-mate".

VULPES_VULPES

I think chess computers are programmed to spite check in order to hold off mate as long as possible.
