Even adults like the mods here , don't like to talk about it. I thought this was what a forum was for. hmm....

I agree. Why should the white player always get to move first?

LudRa95

The colour of the player does not determine who moves first.

That's why desegregated chess was invented:

It's a f***ing GAME. There are black pieces and white pieces to differentiate between the sides. There is NOTHING racial or racist about white moving first.

The modern rule of white moving first came about because earlier, who moved was determined by a flip of the coin. It was considered "lucky" to have the black colored pieces, so to "even" things out, the player with the white pieces got to move first.

In Medieval Europe the Church didn't approve of the game, considering it a frivolous past-time that took time away from "thoughful" prayer and working (to earn money for sustaining a living and give thithes to the Church). To make it more "palatable" to the Church authorities, the game would sometimes be presented as "morality" play between the forces of good vs. evil (white and black respectively given the cultural association of those colors).

So to some extent there are cultural biases associated to black and white, but that permeates much of Western culture well beyond just the game of chess. And the white moves first rule had nothing to do with that given that having the black pieces was considered "lucky".

In the game of Go - black moves first. Is it racist that black moves first instead of white?

In checkers assuming red and black colored pieces, black moves first. Is it racist that black moves first?

There is PLENTY in this world that goes on that is legitimately RACIST that needs to be addressed. Let's not go LOOKING for "racism" in places where there is none there.

My chess set is red vs. black. Among the pieces, I hate whites.

In English (a so called "white country") Draughts, black moves first.

In Ghanian (a so called "black country") Draughts, white moves first.

Is this racist?

Xilmi

I've been thinking of not allowing white to move a pawn 2 squares in the first round as a means of evening the odds. ^^
