Rapid Rating Much Higher than Blitz

I've been playing some blitz games recently and I've noticed my opponents are consistently hundreds higher in their rapid rating compared to their blitz. I'd say about 60-70% of the time, and most of them have a lot of games. I get that people can be worse at faster games, but then being hundreds higher I'm just finding myself getting absolutely destroyed. Obviously, I need to improve, but it's hard to see how I can in blitz when my opponents are so far ahead in skill that's it's difficult for me to gradually learn.

I really didn't think it used to be like this when I played blitz, but it appears to be the case now? I'm just kind of frustrated and wondering if this isn't normally the case, or if I just had a really bad streak or something.

Things aren't the same as they used to be since they moved 10 0 from blitz to rapid in September 2020.

Why is this guy allowed to continually say things that aren't true on here, regardless of how many people argue with him? He's the #1 troll on Chess.com due to the sheer amount of time he baits people into spending arguing with him and at the same time, is one of the worst players on the site.

10 0 rapid is the most popular time control on chess.com.

Danny recently said 10-rapid is still the most popular on chess.com and even was mentioned on hiakru stream when he was promoting the 650k tourney

Generally speaking people who play x time control will have a higher rating in that time control compared to others.

Ten minute is the most popular time control on the site.

Ten minute used to be blitz. Back then there were more people with higher blitz ratings than rapid ratings, because more people played 10 minute than 15|10. And those who played 15|10 usually had a higher rapid rating than their blitz...

Around 2100 is when people stop playing rapid, and blitz/bullet ratings are higher.

But are they going off new statistics or still assuming from the 5 year old information?  I just messaged the employee who provided the original data to see if he will provide updated info.

You messaged @erik

I didn't realize you knew him.

10/0 is an absolutely terrible time control.  Any speed chess without an increment is just garbage. Chess.com needs to wake up to 2022 and get on page with the other sites that focus on rapid and classical. This focus on speed chess here has gotten very, very old.

That may be your opinion but it seems like 99% of the people disagree with you.

Somebody asked Danny Rensch why chess.com doesn't add a 10 5 control in one of the last "State of Chess.com broadcasts".    He explained it.   I will try to find the link.

Chess.com would be all about slow chess if that's what its members wanted.

/ I notice you mostly play blitz.

Danny Rensch offered 12 million reasons a 10 5 time control is not going to be added. (at the 1:23:30 mark)

Danny Rensch provided updated data.

  • 6.0 million 10 0 games
  • 4.5 million 3-5 minute games
  • 1.5 million bullet
  • 0.875 million all other time controls COMBINED

This thread was side-tracked by CooloutAC making unsubstantiated claims about rapid chess being for beginners and being less popular than bullet and blitz.

I think I have dealt with that now.

I don't have a breakdown of time control preference by rating. That would be good to find. I agree that titled players prefer blitz and bullet but they make up a small percentage of the users here.

Speed chess is fun to watch at a high level but I don't really enjoy playing it. For players like me fast time controls just lead to terrible games of chess and bad habits.  So I rarely play blitz and as a result my rapid rating is much much higher.
