howcome the blitz rating mean is lower then standard?
i soppose that if the game is harder to play, it is harder for everyplayer therfore rating mean should stay on 1200. why isn't it as i seem it should?
It's easier to cheat on standard than blitz; and so there are more cheats. The cheats take rating points from other players (by winning), get banned, and then those points are removed therefore lowering the average.
That is one suggestion; it could also be due to the glicko system that when people first lose games in blitz early on, their rating changes much more than when they start regaining those points (all to do with the Rating Deviation, or RD). Those little points add up across a few million members.
But nobody knows for sure.
I think the main reason the blitz mean rating is about 200 points lower than the blitz standard rating is that Chess.com recently added 200 points to everyone's standard ratings (and more for higher rated players).
Hey... Just FYI the rating distribution is a Poission probability density function. Not a bell curve. Useful to know if you are really intent on figuring out your percentile based on your rating. Sometimes there is an extra hump around the lower ratings which might be explained by juniors being pushed into playing.
How do I look up the rating distribution graph? I'm talking about the bell shaped curve that shows all chess.com players rating distribution. Thanks.
