Rating Gap

We all know that there is a rating gap between standard live chess and blitz live chess.

What I want to know is the following: Is there a rating gap between 10 min blitz games and 5 min blitz games (both without additional time given per move)

p0rc

yes but is the 5 min pool harder i guess is what I am asking. Is it easier to get a high blitz rating by only playing the 10 min games.

It mostly depends on what you excel: 10 minutes blitz might seem easier for you than 5 minutes blitz, if you are actually better in 10 minutes rather than 5 minutes.

Also, it would not make much sense. If you assume that the 10 minutes blitz pool is easier, then it would be easier for anyone. It cannot be easier for everyone, because every time you win a game, then someone has to lose.

Same applies for if you assume it is harder in 5 minutes blitz pool. If you lose, then someone has to win.

But the live Standard Pool is easier compared to the live blitz pool, it has a higher rating.

What I am asking is: Is the 10 min blitz pool easier than the 5 min blitz pool? I.e. is it easier to get a higher rating in the blitz category by only playing 10 min games.

I could simply repeat the same but I will take a different approach.

First, you cannot compare two different ratings directly, i.e. standard and blitz, as one could be inflated and the other not.

And what makes you believe 10 minute blitz is easier than 5 minute blitz? Do you have any data to back that up, or is it just what you experienced?

It all depends what type of time control you are get used to playing. I mostly play 3min or 5min games, so I'd struggle with 10min games a lot more. I tend to find myself playing too quickly and recklessly in 10min games, though having more experience with shorter time contols I can make my decisions a lot quicker.

Yes, that is exactly the point I was trying to make in the #4 post. Thanks.

Good thing we have the 'opposite' experience too now.

I suspect it because the longer time controls generally have a more inflated rating.

For example: Live Standard has a higher rating than Live Blitz. Even though Blitz isnt divided further into 10 min Blitz and 5 min Blitz, I suspect that 5 min Blitz ratings would be lower.

To formulate it differently.

Right now we have 3 categories: correspondence, standard, blitz and bullet.

Looking at the stats we can see that correspondence is most inflated, followed by standard. For Blitz and bullett ratings are lowest. I.e. a 1300 blitz rating is much stronger than a 1300 standard rating.

What I am asking: If we had it divided into time controls, would we see 10 min blitz be higher rated than 5 min blitz.

When there's a 200 point gap and above between you and your opponent and you're at the low end play for a draw.

Ironically bullet has a higher average rating than blitz.

The difference in rating in different enviroment has to do with who is in which environment, and how serious they play the game.

5 and 10 minutes blitz is in the same environment. It the same pool.

I am a slow player, and my blitzrating is at ca 1400, only playing ten minutes. If I should play 3min + 2 sec I guess it would fall down to 1000.

Faster players (among them a lot of kids) can score the other way around.

The blitzpool here is by far the largest and most popular with 1,697,931 players. Maybe this huge population is a reason for why its harder for many people to get high blitzrating?

It is not the same environment. They are not the same pools, they only have the same title: blitz.

The 5 min players play against those who chose 5 min. The 10 min players play against those who chose 10 min. Since the strongest players prefer the 5 min time control (or 3/2), the rating in the 10 min pool will be higher.

The standard live chess pool is more inflated because strong players dont like these longer time controls when playing online.

It is the same pool. I only have one blitzrating. It happens to be based on ten minute games, but if I start 5 minute or 3m+2s games my blitzrating (earned in ten minutegames) will raise or fall when i win or loose.

p0rc

No its not the same pool. You are competing against the 10 min blitz player pool. Those who choose 5 mins are competing against the 5 min blitz player pool. Since the 5 min pool is stronger thatn the 10 min pool, you will lose rating points when you start competing in it.

VyboR

Do you imply that a 1600 player who sololy plays 5|0 games is better than a 1600 player who sololy plays 10|0 games?

And if so, what do you mean with better? Because they are not playing the same game, i.e. one plays with 5 minutes, the other 10 minutes.

p0rc

That is what I am saying.

With better I mean that he would win more games in any time control.

dfgh123

I was rated 1200-1220 in 5 min blitz I changed over to 10 min blitz and I am now rated 1410.

I have no mouse so the extra time makes a lot of difference.

If you couldnt move your pieces fast enough, your case doesnt say much.

I would say that chess standard pool is easier than the 10 min blitz pool and that the 5 min blitz pool is harder than the 10 min blitz pool

This seems more like a blog than a forum topic.  You asked a question and then dismissed everybody.  But, in the end, you might be right.
