Reaching Legends Club Was Disappointing

Today, I've reached the legends league but I find myself disappointed that after winning the competition chess.com has prepared for me it seems to be just a huge waste of time.

Just for the story, I even switched to blitz 3-0 in order to reach Legends club since it's the most efficient way to earn trophies and I absolutely hated it. The events that were "promised" seem to end with the 50k champion competition they've had. And although I knew there wasn't much to expect from it now. It's disappointing to reach the goal and see nothing but an invitation to a club that no one who's there seems to even like it.

It takes a lot of willpower, time and even luck to get here. And I think that even a little message from chess.com showing some appreciation towards the players could have been nice.

I love chess and I don't mind playing on this site. But at the end of day my goal is to improve, they're aware of it and make a business surrounding this core. With their puzzles lessons and analyzer they're luring us to buy their membership showing it everywhere. (I think it's ok but what I'm trying to say is that they limit our ability to improve on purpose so the longer we play our mindset would be to turn into their client which I don't really like especially since I know another site that offer what they do for free)

But here they seem to make us compete for nothing and the rules were unfair to begin with.
As mentioned earlier the best ways to earn trophies were to play blitz 3-0 or bullet 1-0 which gave the best trophies per time we've spent which pretty much forced me to quit rapid at some point since I had to do so in order to win the competition which just shows  that one goal is that they want more players to play in the pool and of course for competition they wanted us to waste a lot of time and work hard for this.

And at the start you could have cheated with a quick rematch lowering your rating or play multiple games at the same time and so on. Which simply shows how unprepared (or even "unserious") they were towards this event.

For me, this site doesn't seem to treat their players with respect nor does it appreciate their community. The way they treat us reminds me of the term "Rat Race" (definition - the unpleasant life of people who have jobs that require them to work very hard in order to compete with others for money, power, status, etc.) It's obvious that if we're joining a competition we're going to work hard to get through the top but we were all signed in without getting asked + I am not sure about everyone but I simply love playing chess and I started playing on this site not so I would start competing in a time format that I don't enjoy and waste my time to reach a league that provides me with nothing but a cool winged trophy when people clicks to my profile.

As a person who poured a lot of effort on this site for the past 1.5 year it seems that we are nothing but "potential clients" for them. Still, I thought this league thing was some kind of a chance for those who weren't interested in membership or simply don't/can't afford it yet loves to play chess on their site. But, so far the only event was for champion league and none for legend league and from how unprepared they were at the start I think it's safe to assume that they simply wanted to promote the blitz and bullet format because it's known to have less cheaters in these areas which somewhat makes sense. See how many players are playing on the site and on what basis which brings the leagues. And most importantly our time after this I guess they would have an interesting data about how many games they've had.

Lastly, I want to mention that I believe competition is good and it improves us a lot not specifically in chess but everything. (regards whether we like it or not that's how we're made) But, I guess many could agree playing blitz non-stop for hours without analyzing your game could potentially harm your play at a longer time control and it's most likely just a huge waste of time.

This site limits our capability to review/train/learn and properly if we're not in their membership program. but now they're even making us compete to waste our time and at least forcing me to play in a format that I don't like for them to collect data and advertise themselves.

I wrote a lot but my point is this site now wants us to have a psychological change instead of enjoying chess to just being addicted to it. I'm so disappointed since I was kind of expecting them to have an arena each week where the winner gets diamond membership but it doesn't seem to be the same for them so far and if more and if they're not doing it from the start for the people who worked so hard to reach there in the hardest of time to reach the league I truly believe it tells at least one thing about them. It really isn't worth it and I feel as if I'll keep playing on this site. I will simply start hating chess some day.

I'm truly starting to wonder whether I've chosen the wrong site to enjoy the game more so I would definitely won't recommend any friend of this site anymore.

The competition ended in early February. You decided to go for Legend only two weeks ago, long after the contest ended.

Don't miss your chance to make comments:

Oh I see I appreciate your comment

I've been at the start of all this and came back two weeks ago so I wasn't aware of it.

Um ya people play blitz to get advantage.  I ripped through each leage finishing 1st in every one so far and about to finish first in Legends as well in a day or two.  So you can do it rapid.  I don't resign when losing or ever and typically take very long to beat and rarely lose quick.  However I do KO opponents early if they don't know the basic defenses at my level.  Leagues are more about time you put in then ability.  Of course you only get points if you win.  Still I have too much time on my hands, and I am highly competitive.  I don't worry too much about ELO or winning, I try different stuff pick up things here and there and add them to my overall game to improve.  When I play tired, hungry, or too long I lose fcus and start to lose.  I get hot/ and cold so going in streaks doesn't mean you are cheating it means you are human.  I suggested that they evenly weight the Rapid, Blitz, and Bullet to weighted points per minutes that way no advantage to doing blitz or bullet over rapid as currently is.  However if you win quick at Rapid then you build quicker.  Still it should be evenly weighted and definately favors Blitz players overwhelmingly.  However I notice even at higher levels people that play blitz lack and end game.  That is because they rarely play it.  Playing a whole game until the end has huge benefits in a real chess game to the finish even if losing or trying to draw to prevent the loss.  The winner of the Legends league should get something. Like maybe a free membership for a year or something.  Then again I may be biased since I am about to win it.  We are not OWED anything.  That is a communist mentality/ socialist ideology.  I appreciate the platform and just want to win or bragging rights and show off my buff biceps for all to admire.

Anonymous_Dragon

Absolutely feel the same here . But guess we have ourselves to blame as well for reaching that stage ages after the competition was over

BarbarianGoth

Ehh I just want some kind of title.  After Legends League victory I can relax and work more on studying my library of awesome moves and getting my ELO and puzzle skills up and just socializing on here crushing people I know and bragging about my incredible consecutive run of weekly #1s straight to the top!

BarbarianGoth

Ehh its for entertainment and sure more people are occupied with family, work etc.  So its about balance.  I am just competitive.  Plus chess is addictive, and right now I have the time.

BarbarianGoth

Hey competition smompatition.  I want to win the league for bragging rights and continue the string to the top consecutive 1sts.  For me some award prize money or whatever doesn't matter.  It's all about bragging rights.

BarbarianGoth

Well I don't think they should charge to verify people or to enter tournaments extra, that should be in the cost of membership if paying  member.

Hello. Researching I found this

https://www.chess.com/article/view/chesscom-legends-arena-2022

And the $50.000 contest (already expired)

I don't know about any other prizes available for winning that league. As nothing concrete explained at https://www.chess.com/leagues

Martin_Stahl

The Legend club has monthly prize arenas.

calio07

Hello Martin. Is there some website where we can see these events schedule/prizes? Thanks in advance

justbefair

They are all announced here on this site.

This is just a simple preface to the suggestion. If someone doesn't have a premium account with diamond. There are ads. So the more games that people play and the more trophies they have...technically it will be better for Chess.com because those users who are not already diamond will have more screen time on ads. This is a great thing.

So my suggestion would be if someone amasses a large amount of trophies and they are perhaps not already diamond. Then they can "trade-in" a certain amount of trophies for something like, "an extra puzzle" or perhaps, "an extra end-game simulation" from the "learn" area.

From a business' perspective, it could be factored out mathematically to gauge how many trophies correlate to how much exposure to ads and then net a profit by giving these perks.

Also, if someone already has premium, they could convert the trophies into something cool like an ultra-premium "flair" avatar, or perhaps a trophy-only based puzzle or challenge. This kind of engagement I think would only add more excitement to the trophy system. (which I already feel is excellent, this just might make it more fun).

BTW, this is an amazing and excellent site. I haven't had this much fun in chess in years. Thank you so much Chess.com player base and community and staff for literally adding extra fun to my day!

Let_me_be_a_winner

Yes, I don't really like how the system works but as least it gets you to play more.

monkey

Because people cant downgrade. More and more people get into legend club. This means that, now, to get into legend is way easier.

imanueltantodaud

i just hope they analyze their game after playing, and spend their time wisely, instead of playing too much.

DaInfinityBot

Yea, i agree with imanueltantodaud. People should be able to be kicked out for not enough points.

The Legend League setup is enormous help to one particular subset of players:  those who are afraid of losing and afraid of losing rating points.  The advice is, "Okay, start off in the league, and you advance by winning games.  That's your goal, score as many wins as you can to advance to the next level.  Arena tournaments give you extra points."

If they follow that advice, then they can get used to playing without fear.  That is one of the most important abilities that chess players need to have in order to advance.

I'm a big fan of chess.com's whole multiple milestone system:  ratings, puzzle ratings, accomplishments, legend league - all the things you can do, which address different aspects of the game.

Combine that with the Practice feature, that lets you play the computer that tells you after each move what you should have played... you don't really need a premium membership, except maybe Gold to get the puzzle benefits.

Are you awarded diamond if you win legend league
