A loss is a loss, not mater how you lost. On time, resignation or mated.
The rating varies lot in the beginning (when you are new on the site) before it stabilize on your "true" rating.

Ok, I'll take your word for it, but I'll still refrain from resigning from here on out...just to be safe :)
There is no need to "be safe." msiipola was correct. HOW you lost doesn't matter. This is true for online as well as for actual, over-the-board play.
If the position calls for resignation, go for it. I resign games all the time.
There are two possibilities:
1) as msiipola said, your rating will probably fluctuate at the beginning a lot more; and
2) the lower-rated your opponent, the more points you'll lose.
Since it doesn't matter in the slightest how you lose (resigning, being mated, loss on time), the explanation has to be found in the above 2 points.
I just finished playing a turn-based game against a much higher rated opponent (about 300 points). I looked to see how many points I would lose just prior to resigning. It said "9". After resigning, I actually loss 39 points. That's why I went in search of this topic to find out what the deal was.
It's not that I would have continued to play just to keep the points (who wants to put themselves through the agony of continuing to play a lost game), but they should add that to the details area: win, lose, draw, resign.
I've never noticed the number of potentially lost ratings points to change during a game in progress, but I've never looked that closely at it.
Hi Tal, I just looked through your games and your archive shows that you resigned a turn-based game today (5/10) and your rating dropped from 1642 to 1633. I'm not sure what you had seen, but it appears the nine point drop was accurate.
@Menamow, thanks for taking a look, but my rating was 1672 on 5/9/10 and dropped to 1633. That's 39 points, not 9.
Hmmm. Well, I think we're looking at the same information but we don't seem to be seeing the same numbers. I do see your 1672, but a month further down. Sorry, not trying to call you out personally, just trying to dispatch any rumors that resigning costs players more points than losing by checkmate.

Does resigning in a game dock you more points than just losing on time, or being mated? I noticed that generally after being mated, I only lose thirty, forty rating points...but once, after resigning, I lost 112. Rookie mistake, I guess, or it could've been my opponent, or any other factor...but I'm not sure.
Anyone?
