You can maybe try The Luhzin Defence by Vladimir Nabokov. I personally haven't read the book or watched the movie, but it's supposed to be good. I watched the movie trailer and it looked a bit too romancey for my taste.
Romance Novels with Chess Player Protagonist(s)?
Oh, yeah, The Luhzin Defence. I'll recommend that one to her when she finishes Memories of Budapest. Nabokov is a really high-level writer. I haven't heard much about Monique Holland yet. Thanks for the recommendation!

That Memories of Budapest looks rather interesting. I have a kindle so I may as well give it a whirl.

You might have her take a look at Stefan Zweig's The Royal Game. Beyond that and The Luzhin Defense, there are about as many good works of fiction about chess players as there are about midgets who play hockey, and there are a lot of stinkers.
This is the name of a removals company. Their slogan is 'best across the board'.

The novel "The Chess Players", by Frances Parkinson Keyes, has Paul Morphy as the protagonist. Though not a romance novel, it does focus on Morphy's personal life. Note that this is a work of fiction, and much of that personal life is made up.

Finished Memories of Budapest. Thank you to Ilyumjinov for bringing it to my attention.
This is a first-rate novel. Great story, great characters, based on real events. At first I was about to give it a pass when I noticed it in the romance category, not really my cup of tea. However, once I started reading I could not put it down. It's more of a general fiction that just happens to contain some romance.
The main character is a 21 yo guy from the US that goes to Budapest for a while to play in serious chess events. He makes FM during the logic of the book, so a pretty strong player. The chess covered in the book seems very real. The author must either be a player or have been advised by one, probably the latter and likely the main character. There is one hilarious caper where a bunch of the regular characters in the book get a GM drunk during a simul so they can score some points.
While chess and romance are elements I would say its more about this incredible club the characters hang out. A scintillating temple of temptation and vice. The vices, in particular, push the main character to the edge. I won't tell you more as I don't wish to spoil it but I can really recommend it. One of the best books I have read in a while. check it out.

Check and Mate by Ali Hazelwood, I haven't read it yet, but having read her other books, it will probably be quite cliché. However, seeing as there are very rare romance books with Chess Player Protagonists, I think you will find Check and Mate to be a satisfying read.

I like the story, Unsound Variaions, by George R. R. Martin.
I’m pretty sure you’re thinking of the short story “Unicorn Variation” that Roger Zelazny wrote partly at George R. R. Martin’s suggestion and sold to various magazines, and was one of the highlights of Zelazny’s collection of short stories published as “The Last Defender of Camelot”
My girlfriend is really into romance novels. She said she's thinking of downloading and reading a free e-book called Memories of Budapest by Dr. Monique Holland about a chess playing couple. https://tinyurl.com/memories-of-budapest
Does anyone know this book or any other man/woman romances to do with chess?
