which one do you think would be good?

Well, the rook is worth about 5 points and the knight is worth about 3. Queen=9, Bishop=3, Pawn=1. These of course are just estimates. In most situations you don't want to exchange your rook for your opponents knight unless it gives you some sort of advantage.

which is better, a sniper rifle, or a machine gun?

rook is really good

I like knights....
they're relatively simple to develop, can hop over pieces, and can cause nasty forks.

Rooks are slow artillery, but once they're in good position, my fair knight has no chance.

"Why not combine them?"

a knooght?

Each has its own weaknesses and strengths. In a more or less even game, it's basic that rook is not to be exchange with knight.

wetland154
that would be cool because you could move in a L and move straight
tactician
The rook is useless in the opening while, the knight can be used in the opening, middle, and endgame effectively. The rook is stronger because it can controls a whole file and/or rank. The knight can sometimes control squares that are "unnecessary," (not that the rook can't but the rook gets more squares to control). For example, when you bring out your knight to Nf3 - the knight gets to control 8 squares- now the knight is controlling g1 and e1, which uses up 2 out of 8 squares that it can move to. If your knight is at the very edge, the knight controls only two squares, and on the side controls 4 squares.

My son and I sometimes play a variant wherein we DO permit combining a rook with knight (so you run into your rook/knight and sit the knight on top of the rook :) Likewise we permit combining a bishop with a rook which is the same thing as queen.

Once combined, the pieces can't be dismantled.

We did consider other combinations but they all had some shortcoming or other. Bishop+knight was physically unstable and the color hopping seemed way too crazy (we temporarily used a dinosaur as a sub.) King atop a rook appeared too tall for our taste and led to an even crazier game. So we no longer do those.

It's loads of fun and has led to many wonderful insights about the game. Just try it out!!!

It depends on where you are , if you are 1500 yards away then take the sniper rifle but if you are in the same room with 50 other people take the machine gun.
