rook or knight

I like knights....
they're relatively simple to develop, can hop over pieces, and can cause nasty forks.
Rooks are slow artillery, but once they're in good position, my fair knight has no chance.

Each has its own weaknesses and strengths. In a more or less even game, it's basic that rook is not to be exchange with knight.

My son and I sometimes play a variant wherein we DO permit combining a rook with knight (so you run into your rook/knight and sit the knight on top of the rook :) Likewise we permit combining a bishop with a rook which is the same thing as queen.
Once combined, the pieces can't be dismantled.
We did consider other combinations but they all had some shortcoming or other. Bishop+knight was physically unstable and the color hopping seemed way too crazy (we temporarily used a dinosaur as a sub.) King atop a rook appeared too tall for our taste and led to an even crazier game. So we no longer do those.
It's loads of fun and has led to many wonderful insights about the game. Just try it out!!!
which one do you think would be good?
