I couldn't help to notice that they have taken down the Russian flag on chess.com My thoughts are that we should keep politics out of the game of chess. This beautiful game brings people from all over the world of different backgrounds together. consider what the country of Russia has contributed to the game. what would chess be without Alekhine, Botvinnik, Karpov and many others. I have honestly considered canceling my membership over this. my feelings are that Russian players should be able to display their countries flag like everyone else.

Yup they block all political threads about this claiming to take no side, yet they have extra Ukraine flags and censor our flag :). Hypocrisy.

My point is to keep politics out. Let people come together on the 64 squares. Chess breaks boundaries cultural and language. Fischer vs Spassky, that was during the cold war for Christ sake

They’re not keeping politics out of the site - they have a clear position where they feel that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is immoral and wrong. But their rule is against political discussion in the forums, because frankly it’s only in a small % of cases it starts out as a ‘discussion’ before rapidly descending into name calling and insults. Same with most ‘discussions’ about religion - long ago they decided it just wasn’t worth the effort trying to keep those threads civil and just blanket banned that topic as well.

And the only restriction on Russian members here is that they can’t display their flag - what a severe sanction that is, I don’t know how you’re coping with that terrible injustice!

I don't want to get into a political discussion over this that wasn't what this post was Meant for. Banning the flag is wrong period.

Maybe we should petition chess.com And if that doesn't work stop accepting games from blank flags. In protest.

Is Chess.com banning members from Russia and Belarus?

Specific Russian and Belarusian players sanctioned by the global community have been banned from Chess.com. We have identified and closed accounts from multiple sanctioned Russian oligarchs.

Chess.com is not instituting a ban on all Russian or Belarusian players on our site and events. We believe it is counterproductive to isolate innocent Russian and Belarusian citizens from the global community. Participation in the global community is important to spreading truth.

While we are not banning or limiting accounts, payment processing is currently blocked for all major payment processors in Russia and Belarus. Members who currently have active premium memberships are not affected; however, once existing premium memberships expire, they will not be renewed.

We have sent a message to all our Russian and Belarusian members with a link to the open letter signed by 44 prominent Russian players condemning the war and urging its end. Below is the text of the open letter.
