There are many safe GUIs, as long as you get them from the official sites. Arena, Lucas Chess, Scid, Scid vs. PC, ChessX, and then all of the commercial GUIs...I'm probably forgetting a good number of them...

The bigger problem is learning how to avoid malware from other sources. How to learn to harden your system and not do stupid things....

VirusTotal is a good resource.

Don't normally run your account in Administrator mode.

Make good and frequent backups. Make a cloned image of your new hard drive.

This article reviewing 5 GUIs is pretty good: Free UCI-Compatible Chess Programs for the Stockfish Engine. These are well-known, popular programs (including Arena you mentioned in the other thread), so the chance that they are unsafe for your computer is close to zero.

I haven't had a chance to read the entire review article, but I noticed one mistake regarding Arena. The article states that Arena is Windows only. Wrongo! They also offer a native Linux version of Arena.
