Scid for PC versus Scid for Mac

I used to have a PC and I had Scid vs PC.

Now I have a Mac and I have Scid for Mac.

Is it just me or is the Scid for Mac much inferior than the Scid for PC.

The interface is terrible in comparison and lots of windows don't work the same way exactly and always for the worse. e.g. the commentary window includes a duplicate chess board with garish color schemes and the Scorechart is no longer a nice histogram that docks but is an undockable line graph.

Is there anyone who likes the Mac version of Scid?

Like I said earlier, I don't have a Mac, so I can't say.

However, as an aside, have you tried the fork of Scid called Scid vs Mac?

I've only used Scid vs Mac since this morning, so I don't have much experience with it yet, but so far I like chessx better. I'll keep using Scid for awhile to see if it grows on me.

Hi ExcherehcsE, it is Scid vs Mac that I am using.

Hi Phudson, I just downloaded ChessX as it happens to try it out. How can I analyse games on it using the engine? Will it run through the game move by move and post a running score? etc. What do you like about it?

I must admit I loved the Scid vs PC which I would use to analyse all my games and review to see what I could learn and it would post a little graph as well and I could add comments etc. I think it helped me to improve my game considerably. Scid for Mac I find a little less user friendly and it UI is not so good.

Anyway would love to hear how you get on with Scid.

I like the chessx UI a little better - of course it's what I'm used to. I like that it highlights the destination square when you hover over a piece, so that you only have to click once to make a move. You can disable that feature if you don't like it, and right clicking changes the destination square. I also like being able to see the pgn and the analysis at the same time. Maybe I can do that in Scid vs Mac, but I haven't figured out how yet. Chessx is very similar to hiarcs, and much of the information in the hiarcs forums will cross over to chessx.

You can analyze games on it. If there is not an analysis section to the right of the board, just go to View and then select Analysis 1. If you'd like a 2nd analysis window (ie you want to use 2 engines at the same time) you can do that. It's supposed to come with Stockfish preloaded. If for some reason it didn't, in the menu bar go to chessx-preferences-engines, and you can add it much the same as you did with Scid.

Edit: After spending some time using Scid, I see that it can do all the same things that I like about chessx. I still prefer the chessx UI, but as I said before, I'm just used to it. I do like that Scid can auto annotate games, something that I don't believe chessx does.

The thing is that ChessX is not the same type of program as SCID.  SCID is database software, ChessX doesn't really support database functions at all (it only handles PGN format, which is awful for databases).
