SCID vs PC

The program won't know who is winning.   No program can determine that.  Only an engine can tell you that, and only after it has analyzed the position.  So even though you don't want to analyze, that's the only way to know who is winning.

To do that...

Paste the position in, by first copying the FEN from an outside source, and then pasting it into the program.  (EDIT - PASTE FEN)

If you don't have the FEN, then EDIT - SETUP BOARD might be the best way to enter the position.  Of course, if you have th entire game score you could load that and then just go straight to your desired position.

Click the ANALYSIS ENGINES button.  Your #1 engine will then load and start anaylyzing that position.  A window will pop up showing the analysis, the engine info, an option to increase or decrease the number of lines you want displayed, etc.

Alternately, you can click TOOLS - ANALYSIS ENGINES and then choose from any of the engines you've already installed.  (I currently have about 25 of my favorite engines installed.)

Note that you can have more than one engine analyze the same position at the same time.

Thanks for the answer, I really appreciate it.

I know how to analyse a game. I was just wondering if one could get the evaluation of the actual position. Seems the answer is negative, but thank you still.

I'm curious, where do you think the evaluation comes from?

I know that the evaluation comes from the engine itself and not the GUI. However, when one analysis, the score we get is the final score (meaning, we're not really evaluating the position we see on the board, but the moves our engine knows as the best).

Btw, does anyone know how to change the clock? I'd like a digital clock, but I can't seem to find a place to change it.

MrEdCollins

I'd like the option for a digital clock too.  It's on my wish list.

Scid vs. PC 4.9 is out.. http://scidvspc.sf.net

Big news i guess is it has docking mode.

Digital clocks already exist for FICS  (Options->FICS), so i guess they'll appear for the other Player vs. Computer features sometime or another.

Great program but it would be interesting if someone would find a way to incorporate CQL--Chess Query Language--into this program!

Keep an eye on Scidb... The developer is working on that feature.

bufferunderrun

Yep, scidb is quite promising. The author needs to port it to Windows though.

Scidb certainly does look good, I googled it and hopefully it will be completed soon so that it can run on Windows with CQL.

Jeez, I just re-read all of my old posts in this topic, most of which I wrote about nine months ago.  Did I really write all of that?

Someone had way too much time on his hands.  Smile

I can't wait to play around with 4.9.  Unfortunately, I won't be able to do so until AFTER I study and take an upcoming exam in my Accounting Class.

Crosparov

Has anyone installed 4.9 into Ubuntu 13.04? I can't seem to make it install, in my computer with Mint it installed with no problems. Just curious to see if someone else has managed to install in 13.04.

MrEdCollins

No, I can't help you there, but note that 4.9.1 is already out, fixing a couple of bugs:

Changes: 4.9.1 (May 4, 2013)

Fix promotion bug in non-docked mode
Small pictures allign top/bottom in game info
Clickable crosstable columns
Make an undo point with Setup Board, and disable undo for Trial mode
Add Tournament lookup to Player Info window
PGN import window was not getting mapped

Crosparov

Thanks, I'll update my Mint with 4.9.1, also tried again in Ubuntu 13.04, still no go. Anyone that has managed to get it installed in 13.04, please post how you did it.

Thanks again, I read this whole tread, very interesting with good info.

Scid vs pc does not come with a database but you can get one here:

http://www.top-5000.nl/pgn.htm

Click on Million Base 2.2

And to drag games from an open database to the clipbase hold your pointer over the database (with clicker held) for a second and then drag over to clip base (the pointer will change shapes when ready)

a)  make sure you have filtered to only the games you want to move and make sure you have the games list window open.

DrFrank124c

I feel that I should be a chess master with all the time I have spent in my life studying and playing chess but whenever I play a strong player he seems to come out with a lucky move and win the game! I also fee that I deserve to be rich with all the hard work I have done in my life! Since everybody else is complaining I have a right to complain also, I guess.

@ tomgdrums thanks for the database. im not sure i understand your directions for dragging to the clipbase.

do i open a database in the game list or pgn window and then move the cursor(held down) over the pgn or game list window and drag any game to the clipbase.

Depends.

If you just want to save one game to clipbase just go up to file menu of the game that is currently showing in the pgn window and click on save to clipbase.

If you want to save multiple games from a database to the clipbase you must open the games list window highlight the games and then drag to clipbase via the method I mentioned above.  It took me a second to get it but once I did I have found it to be the easiest database method I have seen.

analyzethispgn

thats great.

what is the purpose of the clipbase. is it to store games or to edit games

tomgdrums

the clipbase makes it easy to save games for study and then move them to a new base.

You can edit games in the base they are already in.

Also the clipbase makes it easy to convert a pgn base to the propietary scid vs pc format which makes it easier for editing.
