shogi board - measurements

Hello,

I have ordered a shogi board, but length and breadth is not the same (29,5 mm and 33,5). Is there a special consent? In accord with a map (it was in the board) the side from "left to right" is the longer side. But in accord with all other maps on the Internet the side "up to down" is the longer side (just measure here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:MacShogi_modified.png ; 14,5 x 13,3)

I know, you could say, this is unimportant: But I want that this shogi board is arranged in my room in the right way.

And another thing that confuses me: Why is the image of the pieces different from the Kanji names? It is very complicated..

Sorry for my bad English..

Thanks beforehand ;)

Please refer to this discussion titled "Shogi (and Go) boards are not square" in an English-speaking shogi community of 81 square universe at http://forum.81squareuniverse.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2826

As to the second question, sorry I don't think I can get it correctly but the images of the reverse side of a Pawn, Lance, kNight and Silver are all written form of " 金"(Gold) since they move exactly in the same way as a Gold does after promotion. In addition, the image of the reverse side of a Rook is a written form of "龍王" while that of a Bishop is a written form of "龍馬". Although many shogi pieces have two-kanji-character-image on it, many shogi books in Japanese language uses one character-piece system to save to space of pages to reduce cost of pubishing. In that case, the first character of each piece is used as an image of the pieces in those books except for the promoted Bishop(龍馬) using the second Kanji character since it's the same as the promoted Rook(龍馬) to tell which is one from the other. In books and many texts on the net, the simplified version of the Kanji Character(竜) is most often used instead of full or correct character of 龍 to save printing costs.

Just for you reference, since I guess you are resident in Germany judging from your Flag with your post, you might be intreted in the existence of shogi potal site exists in German at http://shogideutschland.de/index.html

Bei realen Brettern muss es länger in Längsrichtung als in Seitenrichtung. Die Streifen des Holzes sollen dann in Längsrichtung laufen. Das ist eigentlich wichtig. ;)

@tigerprowl: Now I have emended my mistake. I'm a beginner, I have forgotten to make the ご to a Kanji. すみませんが、kanjiは、ちょっと。。。

shogi is 20 times as complex as chess and a standard time control tournament game is typically twice as long as a standard time control chess game.  making total amateur no increment blitz shogi even more ridiculous (or fun depending upon your perspective) than complete amateur no increment blitz chess. all apologies for any and all spelling and grammatical errors.
