Shogi (Japanese chess) being brought to me from Japan.

A shogi set is being brought to me from Japan by someone.

I obviously haven't opened it yet, since I haven't received it. So here's a picture from Google of what a shogi looks like.

I don't know how to play, or who I will play it with yet. But there are sites for learning and playing it online. What do you guys think? Has anyone here ever played shogi?

Shogi vs chess.

Shogi is a very nice game. There are apps available so you can play against bots on a phone or tablet. There's also lishogi.org where you can play against humans. The user interface of lishogi.org looks almost the same as lichess.org. There's very few draws in shogi games because captured pieces can be brought back into the game and most pieces can be promoted to something a lot more powerful. Thus, shogi games also often last a lot longer than chess games. Games with more than 100 moves are not unusual in shogi.

The movements of the pieces are similar to chess piece movements but there are some quirks, like for example, the knight can only move forward (but still with an L-shape movement), or the lance can only move forward, or the pawn can only move and capture forward (unless it's been promoted). Another fun aspect of shogi is there's more emphasis on castles or defensive formations. Unlike in chess where you only have kingside or queenside castling, there's a ton of different castle formations in shogi. Lol.

My shogi set has arrived.

Gonna have to start memorizing the meaning of these symbols!

I just tried posting pictures of my shogi set that just arrived, but I don't see them. It said they were added. How strange.

I don't know how to play properly but the above site is most popular in shogi community to play real people in real time

there are eight pieces

1. lance, can move like a chess rook but only forward (can not go backwards or to the side) they are the pieces in the corners.

2. next to the lance is the knight, it moves like a chess knight but again only forward, meaning it can jump one square forward and one square forward diaganol.

3. next to the lance is silver general it moves like a king but can't move backward left or right.

4. next to the silver general is the gold general, gold general moves like a king but not diaganolly backward.

5. is the king moves like a chess king, it can be checked and to win it must be checkmated

6. the pieces on the third rank are pawns, they can only move one square forward, and capture forward (not diagonally like in chess)

7. 2nd rank to the left piece is the bishop moves like a chess bishop

8. 2nd rank piece on the right is a rook moves like a chess rook.

capturing/placing pieces

1. when you capture a piece it is put in your hand and during your turn you can place it as your own piece.

2. you can't place a pawn with a pawn of the same file as another of your own pawns

3. you can't place pawns to get out of checkmate or to give checkmate

4. if you place a piece in the promotion area the piece is not promoted, and must follow the normal promotion rules

promotion

1. the promoting area is the back THREE ranks

2. to promote a piece you must move it into or out of the promotion square

3. promotion is not forced unless the piece would have no legal moves (for example a lance getting all the way to the 9th rank it has no moves thus forced to promoted)

4. promoted pieces when captured return to their unpromoted state

5. the pawn, lance, knight, and silver general when promoted moves like a gold general

6. the gold general and king do not promote

7. the bishop and rook when promoted gains the movement of the king and keeps their past movements. (promoted bishops can still move diagonally but also has king movement)

oh also stalemate counts as a loss for the one delivering stalemate(its bad manners)

i think i got all the rules let me know if you have any questions, and here is some advice

1. material means a lot less in shogi, be very willing to sac material

2. in shogi it is a lot harder to defend from behind because the piece's backward movement is very limitted, thus in some games it actually can be safer for the king to get to the opposite rank

3. chess players have a lot easier time picking up the game i managed to get to 4kyu on 81dojo within a month, so if you ahve any friends who like shogi you can show off some quick improvements wink.png
