Should FIDE have a new rank title

I know FIDE has FM, IM, and GM but I wonder if there needs to be another upper classification since to me there should be a distinction between levels of GM.

Elite Grand Master? To me, that has a nice ring to it what are people's thoughts?

There’s an unofficial super GM category for players over 2700 FIDE. There are about 50 players who have reached this. Everyone knows what you’re talking about so is there really a reason to make it official? They’d have to set up standards and ratings are subject to inflation, so it would be a mess to figure it out. There really is no reason to do it

So why have IM and GM then? Why not just have GM or not? I think there is a vast difference between someone who plays at a 2500 level and someone who plays in the upper 2800. The difference between 2200 (Candidate Master) to 2500 (GrandMaster) is 300 and that encompasses 4 titles CM, FM, IM, and GM so for achieving another 300 beyond GM is not even worth one other title? Seems lopsided and for players at that level, it's a much smaller percentile of players that would ever achieve it. Interesting conversation....

Titles are a good shorthand for telling people more-or-less how good an individual is at chess (more accurately, it tells people that the individual was good enough to the obtain that title at some point; they may or may not be that good any more).

But if someone's good enough to be an Elite Grandmaster, everyone already knows they're really, really, really, really good. What does adding another title accomplish?

Why not have 10 categories? Why not 15?! It’s just not necessary. What exists works fine. A super GM title would only add prestige, not anything useful. We all know who the exceptional players are.

More people are playing chess now then in the past. So why not just change the criteria needed to be a grandmaster harder to ahieve?

Brings me back to my original question why have CM, FM, IM then? It just seems weird to me that there are 4 different titles that span 300 rating points but nothing above 2500. Why is it so important to differentiate between 2200 and 2300 rated player? Not trying to be a smart mouth I am genuinely asking and so far no one has come up with a good explanation. I think we can all agree that a 2500 rated player and a 2835 is miles apart in terms of skill level...

Because they don’t give titles to everyone. You have to achieve something to get a title and somewhat arbitrary lines were drawn. It’s like asking for a super hall of fame because some are clearly inner circle. It’s just pointless. They have rating points. We already know who the best of the best. Another category is unnecessary!

FIDE's GM and IM titles predate Elo ratings. Presumably the idea was to "officially" differentiate the great from the very good. Subsequently, the way in which these titles were awarded became tied to ratings, among other things. CM and FM were introduced after ratings: FM in 1978, CM in 2002. I don't know what motivated FIDE to create these titles.
