i have an untreatable condition called aphantasia that makes me unable to visualize at all. since visualization is so important in chess, i'm considering quitting. should i?

LibertyBrickwood

You should never quit!

SRMarquardt

No, most people can't visualize. Keep playing and enjoy the game.

LibertyBrickwood

I am terrible at visualising

Moonwarrior_1

Never give up

I too have aphantasia. My rating is 1050, so not great but not terrible. How about you?

Anonymous_Dragon

I have trouble differentiating between the horsie and the lady queen. Yet am not quiting. So you certainly shouldn't.

Never quit. Keep going! You have miles to go! You condition is not an excuse for you to quit. You will have beautiful days ahead. May the universe conspire in your favor!happy.png

Me too awful at visualising although as far as I know dont have any condition.

If you enjoy playing then don't give up.

I'm never going to be a great player but I still enjoy it.

ur rating is 1500, but just in case ur not trolling i will explain

the horsie moves in an L shape, 2 in any direction except diagonal, and then moves 1 more to form an L. the horsie can jump over pieces too

the lady Queen can move in any direction as far as she wants but she cannot jump over pieces nor move like the horsie

If u enjoy chess, no.

Who cares if u have a condition that makes chess harder to play? if ur having fun, then keep playing. It's a hobby after all, not like ur playing it to make money.

hobbies are involved in ur life so u can let off some steam, u dont need to be good at it to enjoy it.

Pretty sure a lot of kids hear about this new condition aphantasia and misdiagnose themselves.

It's so poorly explained, and the self tests are so silly (IMO) that I really wonder how many people who say they have it actually have it.

Well actually I was trolling. I assumed this post itself was some kinda trolling attempt . But am sure that's not the case . I sincerely apologise if my previous comment was offensive or affected you in a negative way.

Back to the question , I will echo the same opinion as that of @soniasthetics . As long as you are playing it as a hobby , there's no reason for you to quit it .

For example this is, IMO, an extremely stupid test. Close your eyes and visualize a red star.

What do you see?

JijoAttumalilJose

I can't see anythingtongue.png

llama47

Nobody actually sees a red star in the middle of the blackness when they close their eyes... and if they do, then I definitely have aphantasia 100%

But I'm not so bad at chess, and I can even play blindfold games so...

IMO visualization is totally different. When I visualize a red star (or anything) it's not in the middle of the blackness. The blackness goes away completely. There's no black, there is just nothing, and the only thing I "see" is whatever I'm visualizing, but it's not with my eyes, because it's like my eyes are turned off when this happens.

A red star in the middle of blackness is totally misleading IMO.

JijoAttumalilJose

Where is the red star?

You're colorblind then tongue.png

Here, I'll outline them in white
