I am reading several Chess books and would like to move the pieces along with text narrative. I have a board at home but it is more cumbersome than practical
Perhaps you can try Chess Book Study Free - Apps on Google Play? It has an interactive board with moves that go along as you scroll.

The free version of Chessify offers what you’re looking for in spades. There will be a bit of a learning curve, but it’s really worth it. It took me the better part of an afternoon to figure it all out, but when I did, it was amazing. I could take a photo of the puzzle in the paper book and it would automatically load onto my iPhone and let me work with it from there. Keep tapping and swiping until you figure everything out. You’ll LOVE it.
