The pawn at e7 can take the Knight at d6 but there's a discovered check with white's Queen.  Is the definition of checkmate when the King can't move or also when this type of thing occurs?

dwaxe

Checkmate is also when a noob posts a topic without checking whether it has been posted before. Actually, it's called spam.

awww come on dwaxe, this post isn't half as bad as the future post 'What is the best reply to 1. D4' thats gonna apear in the next week or 2.

Actually, it's far from the definition of spam.

Whay are chess nerds acting cool and tough?  I don't get it.

Yes, I am a "noob" at chess. I'm a small business-owner and I'm raising a family and busy coaching swimming.  Just picking up chess on the side.

Anyways, what's the answer to my question?

If you searched, you would have found it yourself. The staff really needs to enforce forum rules more often.

I highly doubt you actually didn't know what checkmate is...

The king cant move in the position you give, and it is check.  The checking piece cannot be blocked or captured, and the king cant move, so it is checkmate.  Checkmate occurs if the king is in check, and cannot be prevented from being captured on the next move.

A smothered mate is a type of checkmate delivered by a knight, where the king is surrounded by his own pieces so he cant escape.  The most common is in the first diagram below, often following a queen sacrifice on g8 while the queen is protected so the rook has to recapture, but they can occur in other places on the board.  These central smothered mates usually occur in the opening, with a rook next to the king having moved to prevent capture by a queen on g2 and a bishop pinned in front of the king to prevent having to block a check with the queen, losing the queen.

This is  all I need to know.  You see, I was looking at the smothered mate and thinking the knight could be taken but it would open the king to the queen's checkmate.  It just felt different.

Those of you who said to use the search function are right.

But let's not forget this site's motto: "play. learn. share".  Chess is the most gentlemanly and sporting of games, so let's keep that up. No question is a bad question.

Chess is an incredibly complex and difficult game to master.  Likely this accounts for the cockiness of more than a few that have worked hard to develop their skills.

Some are content to know just how play the game, which is a small achievement in itself.

I apologize for calling you nerds, not that being a nerd is a bad thing, I was reacting to dwaxe's ignorant statement.

Chess does indeed shackle the intellect and more than a few social lives. You have to realize that I'm a man taking care of business on so many different fronts during the day, I can only find a bit of time for chess.  And it is hard to get good at.

I wish more people acted like this - thanks for your post !!

Wow. Dwaxe there really is no need for name calling such as "noob".

If you would like the staff to "enforce forum rules more often." maybe you should read rules #1 and #2,

"#1 - Respect others. Do not be mean.

#2 - No profanity, swearing, or inappropriate language or topics."

you need to understand that its annoying that people don't no how to use the search function. People start discussions about topics over and over, sometimes only days apart or while the other disscussion is still hot.

I don't agree with his reaction but he has the right to be a bit ticked.

Now you know, right?

Deadpoetic:  Good point.  People may need to stop posting about the same things over and over. I agree.

I simply think it's rude when a new player joins Chess.com and asks a question on the forums and he is called a noob.

I'll try and control my temper next time. Wink

Ya, I know what you mean belringer thats why I came out defending Ruy in my first post (3rd of the forum).

But in Dwaxe's deffence, im sure we've all had the days where we just snap at someone after a bit of frustration has built up.
