Smurfing is a legal thing here but why?

A user of this site has every right to play unrated games.

That's not smurfing. unrated games can be played against any rated player, not just lower rated ones. Plus once the player starts playing rated games, their rating will increase because they will beat all these "weak" players.

So im not sure what ur on about. There's nothing wrong with any of this.

The real problem similar to this is sandbagging, where stronger players will deliberately sabotage their own rated games and resign so their ratings drop then go into weaker rated tournaments online and smash everyone.

Sadly smurfing is legal if they play unranked forever. Whats the point? Beating low rated newbies. Thats the point and thats the problem. Some people only live here to beat 20.000 newbie who has elo 600 or bellow. They refuse to go ranked so they can keep their low elo so the poor new players can even see who is the opponent. If you are a 600 and got a match with a 1700 you would just left the game OR you wanted to try beat him. Thats ok But when you got an elo 600 opponent and you got demolished because he was never elo 600 thats really not ok. Everybody should show true elo before starting any game with anybody because thats fair play. Its ok if you dont have enough mach to show true elo. But playing only unranked is an another thing

what pace do they play?

to avoid them play daily and Rapid it should not interest them too much !

Why smurfing is allowed here?
Chess.com refus to do anything against smurf accounts with +90% win ration.
Time to time im stumble uppon players with tremendous wins and basicaly non lost games.
They usualy bellow elo 1000 or 1500 and playing against the low rated community.

Since they play unrated games they can keep their elo.

But what is their true elo?
I saw players with elo 600 and has several wins against 2100.

Why chess.com let players demolish low rated newbies?
They ruining the chess experience for thousands and thousands of players...

Most of my games are unrated and I play players in the range from 100-2200 (I have not been paired against 2300+ so far). I experienced that some of these 600-700 players are playing very strong. Some of them have managed to beat me. After each of these lost games I checked the accurancy. If the accurancy of a 30+ move game was 99.x % and they managed to found always the BEST move, then this is cheating (and I reported them). If there were some inaccurancies I acknowledged that they are simply better than me (which would mean that their real rating is at least around my level, but not sub 1000).

so for me was it always stop my account  at 1200 and reset  so am i even high skilled maybe  i will never understand more at this level so i will always stay at decent level or is mmr just a number because if you play so much you will reach 1800 anyway even if you are a noob

it was never about the tilt for me i just enjoy restarting my account have some fun with the lower rated players and i improve on the way because i go on  70-12 streak - internet issues ,and - just trowing wins

i just feel like if i can't go from 500 -1200 without loses i don't know why would i play vs higher players from 1200+ you  know

I stopped playing rated games a long time ago, so my rating doesn't reflect my actual playing strength. I don't do it to stomp on people, but I just don't want to feel any pressure to win like when I'm half asleep playing before I go to bed and am likely to fall asleep in the middle of a game.

I fix this by setting my unrated challenges to -100 to +400 and I often beat people who are 400 points higher rated than myself. Is this smurfing? I don't think so. Others may. But it's unrated, so why should anyone care? If I play against someone who is really +1000 rated, I'm not going to get upset about it. I'd actually welcome it.

First people are all overly concerned with their rating, and now win percentage? All I can do is roll my eyes.

Avoiding smurfs as a low level player is very very easy:  just play 15|10 instead of blitz on Friday and Saturday afternoons/evenings.   IDK why, but this is 100% effective.

Otherwise, at those times you will definitely encounter two very different skill levels, despite elo....  even in rated games.   You see it, you know it, you go check their accts and tons of obvious sandbag games....

The solution is trivial - play rated. Most players hardly ever play an unrated game.

Your rating will reflect your play. It will go up and down. It should never be a reason not to play (except if you realise you are in a state where you will play badly - in this case, wait until you are in a better state!).

The fact FIDE is now awarding titles based on online play on here make me want to vomit.   IMO e-sports in general can never be respectable because the amount of people with multiple accounts or playing non rated games make it all invalid imo.

What do you mean? I know they have Arena titles on their site, which aren't the same as OTB titles.

Im new but arent unrated matches different from rated matches.. even if you lose unrated it doesnt matter since your rank wont drop or anything. its just a chest match with nothing at stake, just for fun.

ShrekChess69420

Who cares about unrated games? Just play rated games, run into some engine users, problem solved! happy.png

The player is playing unrated so their opponent des not lose rating points

mariust91

This is the most ridiculous post I have seen here.

Just go play rated games. The whole purpose of rated games is to play someone at your own level.

If you decide to play unrated it should not matter what rating the opponent has.

What if is someone that never played online, like an elder… he can be good and someone can think he is a Smurf right?

#1 solution:play rated I do agree with the original post tho. I would welcome a chance to play a game with a 2000+ and go over it(with them or alone) to see the skill difference and what i did wrong. However, I would get annoyed to hop on just so I can play some without staking rating points, and get steamrolled by a 2000. 2400s prob don't do it because they are known in the chess community.

If you don't want to get steamrolled by a 2000 upon searching for an unrated game, then go into your search seciton and limit it to a certain rating points above and below you. then click search. If it takes too long cancel the search and start again.

prot0555

I don't want to get steamrolled by a 2000+ with a 600 account. Read the top post@Soniasthetics

Mate i gave you a solution you just don't know how to read.

Actually you're the one who doesn't know how to read because this entire thread is about strong players disguising their strength on alt accounts with lower ratings than what their actual strength is.

So your advice, "If you don't want to get steamrolled by a 2000 upon searching for an unrated game, then go into your search seciton and limit it to a certain rating points above and below you. then click search. If it takes too long cancel the search and start again." is worthless because a 2000+ rated player can open an alt account with a lower rating than what their actual strength is.

thats not allowed though, you realise that right?

If that person who is "smurfing" is reported, they will get dealt with.
your comprehension skills are terrible. the guy never talked about smurfs, he was talking about not versing much higher rated players in unrated games.
If you verse someone a similar rating in unrated and they are pummelling you, your first instinct shouldn't be "oh theyre a smurf". your first instinct should be "im playing bad".
If you have doubts about your opponent go check their profile. if you find it suspicious then make a report.
