Somebody Called Chess “A Wasted Talent”

In a video of 60 Minutes with Magnus Carlsen, somebody in the comments said “So he plays chest instead of video games? Wasted talent!!!!” They didn’t even spell chess right. Nearly everyone else in the reply section agreed and one of them was like “Kids these days” What do you think?

Chest play is most certainly not a wasted talent.

I think you seem to actually be reading the comments on YouTube.  I didn't think anybody ever really did that.

You're the hero we all deserve.

I'd rather hit the gym and do some bench presses.

Looks like someone knows how to pump it up.

I do

In the early days of chess, the great masters had day jobs.  Emanuel Lasker was a world-class mathematician, his cousin (also a GM) Edward Lasker was an engineer, whose chest playing proved quite important to society.

I'd rather be good at chess than good at video games, because it is usually easier to become proficient in most video games (although I guess chess could count as a video game in some instances). However, I'd rather be talented at mathematics than at chess, because it can be applied to a lot of things outside mathematics themselves. Since I'm talented at neither I don't think too much about this though. There is no wasted talent but I think all talents are definitely not equal...

Thank you for keeping your head in the game.

Yeah. It was a weird experience.

He is quite right. Years of analysis have led me to the conclusion that all who push wood and reposition plastics are insolent beanbags.

Interesting thread.

that's still chest

Fwiw, years ago I designed a parody vintage 45-rpm record label in Photoshop, featuring the song title "Let's Play Chest". I thought it was pretty clever, in an oafish way.

And no, chess isn't at all a wasted talent. It's best if it's part of a diverse talent portfolio, though, imo.

Hey, I am not a beanbag (they used packing peanuts in this thing)!

Greatest apologies, my ghostly woodpusher. Perhaps those of the afterlife can be excluded from my generalization.

Great, someone thinks chess is a wasted talent. Carlsen doesn't, and neither do you. Trust in your own values and opinions, and don't look for validation at every turn.

Chess boxing is the best use of your time. Trains your brain and your body.
