Space Advantage

when a player has space advantage then what should he do to utilize it ?

i always think of that pyramid pawn structure. it limits the space available to the other player which would make an attack easier. it cuts off available squares. if the other player wanted to stop this, they would have to attack the structure at its weakest position or suffer losses due to the supportive nature of the pawn structure. so the focus would be on breaking the base of the structure. this would cause the pyramid to topple and open up space for the other player, this would allow them more room to move around in. think of a boxer being cut off in the corner of the ring. he cant move left or right and so suffer damages, heavy blows from an opponent and the only option is to defend. he would risk a lot of damage if he threw a single shot but that is his only hope to get out. 

i think that it becomes that thing of setting up your pieces without attacking, getting the best position you can compared to your opponent. then make a move. usually at my level players are eager to exchange pawns. if they move a piece and find a fault they rarely retreat. I think that a player would learn from retreating a piece compared to throwing it away. retreat and regroup. i think that you should look for some games that show what happens when you have a space advantage and study those. best of luck.
