Speed up your pc

I have posted in the past about my pc having problems with the clock and at times loosing bullet chess games by several seconds even though I never quit moving just to test to see if I had problems. My wife is an IT guru and told me she would defrag my pc to speed it up. She did it Tuesday and I tried a game of bullet chess to see if there was a change. My rating was then 895 as my pc was slow and the clock would add as much as 5 seconds to my opponents clock at games end. I have moved my rating up 266 points since the defrag and the clock problems disappeared. My game is the same but the speed has made quite a change. Playing opponents with ratings higher than yours unrated for practice helped as well. Hope someone benefits from this as a slow pc causing losses is frustrating. I still loose my share but not because of my pc. Play lower ranked opponents and that is where your skill level will stagnate. Play someone 100 points higher and start winning some is nice. Best win so far is over a 1620. Slippery123

Lose, not loose.

I'm very, VERY surpised defragging helped you.  With today's hard drives, defragging is no where NEAR as important as it once was.  As proof, needing to defrag is one of the big computer myths, as this page describes:

http://www.thirdring.net/tips_pcmyths.htm

The amount of RAM you have, your internet speed, and the number and type of programs you have running in the background are all much, MUCH more important than defragging.  But hey, glad it helped and thanks for posting.

Are you sure that's all she did? As above, I doubt defragging would increase performance THAT much.

Maybe they have an old PC?

Your anedoctal "information" is basically useless since you couldn't be bothered listing any minor details like the specs on your PC (CPU info, amt or RAM, size of HD, OS and how badly fragmented your PC (or was it a MAC?) was (or wasn't) to begin with.

And BTW the fact that http://www.thirdring.net/tips_pcmyths.htm says defragging is no longer necessary is certainly not an obscure opinion anymore, but in this case it's based on some anonymous individual's opinion and strikes me as fairly meaningless and hardly qualifies as "proof" of anything. Let's see some hard data on the subject as provided by www.grc.com

NimzoRoy, shame on you for being impolite--he was trying to help...

Lag has more to do with internet connection than anything to do with the hard drive, it is difficult to see how this helped unless she also improved your connection somehow.

Those with lag issues also should remember that lag is two ways, so even if your connection is fast, if your opponent has a slower one your game can still be affected by lag "adding time" to him at the end.  It isn't actually adding any time, it's just he is not charged for the lag time.

Another major factor in lag issues is java performance, though, especially on older PCs. That's something that could be improved with hard drive related operations (among other things).

No way defragging helps at all with your issue. This is not 1995 anymore.
