stalemate should not be a draw

if the opponent runs out of legal moves then they should be forced to resign!

OTH, if you fail to mate, you shouldn't win.

Reading your sentence, and then mine, gives the reason for a draw.

Sounds like you recently gave up a stalemate.  It's a rule of chess, just like in soccer, nobody except the goalie can use their hands.  If you don't like it, stop playing.

Why should you be forced to resign when you're stalemated? That's nonsense.

Apparently, the OP thinks otherwise.

Thanks for starting a new thread on this. This very subject has never been discussed to death on this messageboard.

I, for one, am very grateful that this tremendously neglected topic should be given an airing. I thin we have ignored this vital issue for far to long! And by the way, people who resort to endlessly checking my king when the are losing are cheaters and should be banned!

Once again, that's nonsense. Perpetual check is within the rules. Therefore, there's nothing wrong with it. If you don't like it, that's your problem. You're allowed to do anything within the rules in order to win or salvage a draw. You're following the rules, but you're a cheater anyway! Interesting logic.

Play shogi.

Kitty-Ventura

if you don't get the kill, time stands still.

Exactly! People who hate perpetual check should play chess variants in which perpetual check is not allowed, such as shogi.

Great idea! But ... who's going to re-program Fritz?

MikeCrockett

compromise. change the scoring system. give 3 points for a win, 1.5 for draw, 1.0 for stale win and 0.5 for a stale loss.

TheBlunderfulPlayer

What are "stale wins" and "stale losses"?

TheBlunderfulPlayer

Oh...

MikeCrockett

lol I wondered if anyone would even notice how silly the suggestion really was. all people would do is negotiate a draw and each player would gain a half point. no one said anything. :-) on a different thread I had suggested 2 for a win 1.5 for a stale win 0.5 for a draw and 0.25 stale loss which I think is a better version.

MikeCrockett

a stale win would be scored for forcing your opponent out of legal moves where as a stale loss would receive some credit for denying the opponent a checkmate.

Ohhh. One thought this was serious.

it is serious. I believe GM Pal Benko first proposed this scoring theme as a means of reducing GM draws back in the 70's. I think it was a good idea.

MikeCrockett

I was using a little bit of humor to see if anyone was actually thinking but it is/was a serious proposal.

NATHANKRISHNA

I think stalemate is a legitimate ending and should not be done away with..

,on the contrary if a winning player gets into stalemate it is his blunder

and if a losing player gets it it is his achievement..
