STalling / abandoning

Have you guys ever had a situation where it feels like someone is just trying to wear the clock down? Play one opening move then leave you waiting for ages. Then another move then wait. They haven't abandonded the game, but seem to want you to abandon it. What's the point?

Yeah @easyleesie, totally been there—and it’s super annoying 😩

Some players do this to try and frustrate you into resigning or abandoning the game, especially in longer time controls. It’s not against the rules to use all their time, but when it's clearly intentional stalling like that, it’s just bad sportsmanship.

If it happens a lot, definitely consider reporting it—Chess.com does review behavior patterns like this, especially if it's repeated across games. And in the meantime, if you're waiting for someone to move and it’s clear they’re stalling, you can just minimise the tab or move on to another game. No need to let it ruin your vibe!

It’s a shame some folks play that way, but luckily, most players just want a good match. You're not alone in being frustrated by it!
