Stalling/quitting games… I just sat here and waited for someone to let the clock run out…

I just sat here and waited for someone to let the clock run out on one minute and 50 seconds left in a 3 minute game. 🙄

Thankfully I was watching the Olympics, so it didn’t bother me much. But this is a cool reminder to apparently many on here who are not aware that they have a recourse in these situations: the option to report people who stall/quit games. In fact, I’m sure that’s the reason so many people like to stall during games, because they don’t realize you can report them. LOL. So report, report, report them! Report the hell out of them, people, come on. I see lots of pushback when people post about opponents running the clock, that’s partly why I am posting this: apparently some need to be educated about the option to report people who stall/quit games.
Cheers!

I play on the app and I’m note sure if I have the report option? At least it wasn’t a 30 minute rapid game.
Zardorian
I only play the app on the iPhone… If you click on the persons picture or on the three lines I think you should see the option to report, and when you click on that you should see the different reporting options, including stalling/quitting games. Give it a try on your next game and let me know if you see it or not. You can look for the options without actually reporting someone, so don’t worry about clicking around.

Incidentally, I just had someone abort on me and when I looked at his games, I saw he played the last several all on the same side.

Thank-you.It does happen.

Rapid is more suited for me but it’s brutal when you have a winning position and the opponent chooses to run out the clock to spite you. So I point to blitz and bullet which I have no business playing speed wise but it’s fun.

You should try arena games. If they abort , you pick up the ELO points at least. People also tend to play more serious as well.

In a thirty minute game, my opponent had only one possible move and then my next move would deliver mate. I had to wait for seventeen minutes !  That's poor sportsmanship and just a plain sore loser. Shame on him.

Because stalling games is subjective, I think if someone has 30 minutes then you should be prepared to sit there until their clocks run out.

I've been accused of stalling when thinking of a move, or the move after a move. If you can't handle the clock times, then play something faster.

Zardorian
Crusader, it works both ways, if you can’t handle a faster game, don’t play it. My point in telling people to report those who stall/quit games is, moderators can then go investigate the offending account and see if it’s a pattern. If it’s not, great if it is, they will obviously do something about it—otherwise, the option to report people would not exist.

I'm just saying you're fighting a subjective battle. I personally think saying anyone is breaking the rules for spending the allotted time given to them is repugnant. If I have 30 minutes on my clock, then I can spend the time I want up to 30 minutes.

Zardorian
Crusader, then you’re calling chess.com repugnant. They came up with the reporting category. They obviously know a lot more than us about people who stall and quit games. What’s repugnant is people who stall/quit games out of spite and/or because they only want to play one color.

If it's only one move, after you report them you can pre-move checkmate and start a new game on a different tab/window or go get some coffee or whatever. I have done that several times. I usually let the know they're pre-moved to check mate and I inquire "while we wait for your clock to run out would you mind telling me why does every insecure bitter coward loser stalls in a lost position?". They get super pissy... Thanks to that I have learned a lot of bad words in many different languages lol

Thinking of a move is different than stalling, my dude. Stalling is when you're in an absolutely lost position like waiting for mate in one, or down a lot of material with absolute no counterplay and instead of resigning or playing till mate people just let the clock run out to overcompensate the frustration of their micrope.nis.. i guess that somehow makes them feel better

It seems like you're confusing stalling with aborting. Stalling has nothing to do with the color you play. That's aborting

Perhaps they were really trying to find a way out? Stressing, pulling their hair out (that all takes time).

Yeah, I don't mind waiting, and they may be busy. We cannot determine what is going on in their life at the time.

If the time runs out, and you win, a win's a win!

Zardorian
Kapivaro, Since there’s no option to report people who abort, I just count it as quitting.
Zardorian
Vlandian, That’s gracious of you, on the other hand, they may also be stalling/quitting out of spite. But no worries, that’s why the option to report them is there: let the moderators figure it out, they are the experts. The more people report, the less it will happen. And then we don’t have to post about it anymore.
