Stockfish Is Incorrect About This Position

I made up a confusing puzzle that is White to move and draw. It turns out that Stockfish says it is completely winning for black. It is not, it is a draw.

This is the position. White is down 75 points of material and Stockfish says -27 but it is a draw.

You can solve the puzzle yourself if you want.

Me (Currently 1301 in rapid) can see a draw that Stockfish cannot.

You can probably find it too.

Stockfish understands the correct line immediately, it just doesn't understand fortress/locked positions very well. It will eventually see that it's a drawn position. Many engines will likely have the same issue, as they are designed to look at material advantage and position and can't see deep enough, quickly enough, to realize the position has no way to progress.

It's not really a problem, since such positions are fairly rare in games anyway, and this particular one isn't a possible one to begin with.

I think Martin got it exactly right.  Stockfish is good at figuring out the best move, but computers are usually programmed to improve their position.   Even though a locked position is a huge step up from a guaranteed loss, the puzzle includes a couple of steps that move black's king around without necessarily "improving" the position in any other respect.

Still, it is a fun puzzle, and it is always good to fiddle around with positions to see what the computer can (can can't) figure out.

The King can go to e8

This is not a chess game position. Stockfish could well refuse to analyze it. Having 8 pawns, blacks can't have more than 2 Rocks.
