Games of the Generals is a great alternative board games.
I also think that the above game ( also known as Stratego) is one of the better available. (*Only please do not compare it to chess!)

Oh yeah ........ Stratego. We used to play that when we were kids. Great game.
People can cheat in bridge though. They can give each other signals about what card to play or what they have in their hand.
There is another great card game popular in Asia that requires thinking and strong intuition and very fun too. It's call Big Two and I love this game.

cheating in bridge is understood as part of the game.
to cheat well is to play bridge well.
i do not admire cheating. i merely point out that two partners who know how to say a certain word, to lift an eyebrow, to ask for a refreshment of drink...this is the underworld of bridge...to study this and know this is to know bridge among players.
chess, on the other hand...is open...one can see it all.
their is a tension of cheating in the sense of the gamemanship in great tourneys of the city one plays in, in the table or chair that one requires and is allowed or disallowed, in the days between games, etc.
...but this is open and seen to all.
chess, over the board, is the most honest of challenges.
I hate cheating and would never play bridge because of that.

What exactly is the point of cheating in bridge?
Only someone that has never really understood the game would think such a thing is a concern of those that play seriously.
What's the point of cheating in any game, really? Unless there's money involved (and then that would be stealing).
stratego is boring.
it would have been or made bettor by the concept of "queening".
if the spy could have become a different piece by landing on the end line of the enemy and then only be allowed to move one move to the left.
thus a new experience. new power, but limited. a queen with power only to one side.
stratego used bombs to protect the flag.
i suggest that a left moving spy/queen, along only one side, would create a new dynamic. a spy who becomes a queen, with limited movement on only her left side, who a bomb cannot destroy means that one must first
determine where the spy is and then at all costs..kill the spy. this is the new stratego.
I think we made up a variation called "Flying Miners" or "Flying Scouts" where the miner (or scout) could fly across the board, like a rook, instead of just moving one square. That made it a little bit more fun.
I am in the works of publishing the 2nd edition of TRENCH, an abstract strategy game for 2 players, based on the trench wars of WWI. It was brilliantly designed by Rui Alípio Monteiro, and 1st edition has been out for a few years now. It has been well received and reviewed by Chess enthusiasts and teachers around the world, and is also a regular part of the Mind Sports Olympaid in London.
I'm about to launch it on Kickstarter for the first time, so I invite anyone that is looking for other strategy games similar to Chess to check it out. It's also available on Google Play, and about to be released on Tabletop Simulator as well.

War Chest, is a chess like game where you build your army, and use coins as troops as well as spending those coins to move troops or use troops special abilities. It also revolves around objectives which you can deploy your troops at. It does have some randomness to it since the coins you use to perform actions and deploy new units are drawn from a bag, but there are ways of creating strategies around which coins you have in your bag, since you can get new coins during the game and increase your likeliness of getting those coins.
Overall a solid game that provides a bit more randomness while still being a very strategic game.
World of Goo, Sudoku, Geometry Wars etc.
Most of the games I have listed are kind of old, but they pass the time if I'm bored or need a quick "gamers fix" I'm sure there are newer versions or better games.
Have fun.
