Sudoku and chess

Picked up a new hobby: sudoku.

I'm doing really good, for only playing a couple days so far.

I finally decided to take a break and play some chess...

Holy cow, my ability to calculate went up like I was on steroids.

Sweet.

Indeed! I too love Sudoku, been playing it for years! But for me, it helps more my visualization abilities (for Chess) although I can imagine it encourages one's calculating prowess as well. Enjoy! 🤗

I've been doing Sudoku for about 15 years. I never saw any cross-over to chess visualization or calculation. Sudoku is simply deduction by elimination.

  • Najdorf96: I guess visualization is more accurate, but certainly helps in calculation.

Batgirl: I suppose everybody's brain is different. Perhaps it's just me that allows Sudoku to benefit my chess playing visialization.

It's been a couple weeks and I'm still playing sudoku and it's definitely helping my visualization. I look at it as a lateral way to help me focus better in chess. It becomes a drag just looking at chess combination or other tactical problems with my chess learning stuff.

It's not, obviously, going to get me a vastly higher rating, but certainly I'll be able to get closer to what my tactical/training rating is. Training ratings (usually tactics), seem to clock higher for most people than their OTB/Online ratings.

This is true. My tactics are about 600 better than my games rating, and my lessons are 600 above that

Since sudoku uses the numbers 1 through 9, it would be possible to choose 9 unique chess pieces for a soduku puzzle. May be incredibly annoying to play, tho.
