First time I ever heard about this... rest in peace...

KitchenerChess

those players that beat him should stand trial for aiding in his suicide.

I have thought about suicide after losses in chess. I am just trying to be good at something as I suck at everything. I might end up like this man and I wonder how many people have already suicided because life is too hard and they suck at everything.

Bully for him!

patheticdefeatist321

To abuse the weak and indulge in a sense of superiority.
This game is filled with narcissists.

Users "thebird" is still active, so seems he didn't kill himself, fortunately. I hope he is getting help.

ksalmon

oh no. was he thinking about su*ci*e?

So many young men are taking their own lives. Talk to someone. Phone the Samaritans. Reach out for help.

For me, it's made me realize how stupid I am. I cannot bear it. It has destroyed me. I am worthless. I wish I had never started playing.

chesslover0003

@nowhere900 no one is worthless especially you. Take a break from chess. Please don't hurt yourself. I am here to talk and listen if you need it. If you need immediate yelp you can always call 911 (or similar service).

Nowhere900

It's too late, chess only exposed the problem that I was too stupid to realize. The problem is not the game.

Don't worry too much, many famous, popular or wealthy people are stupid. So it's not really a hindrance to anything else you may want to do in life.

Many of us have mood swings, especially after a string of losses. Add to that Depression or some other mood disorder and it's not a surprise.

If you think you have Depression or have suicidal thoughts, get some help immediately.

Get some help my friend. Call a suicide hotline in your country and start the conversation.

It's not a "string of losses". It is the realization that I am monumentally stupid. I cannot bear it. I cannot live like this.

Live like something else.

You cant be sane if godmaster comes near you!! Is like an invisible dog animal. Not that he is interested in chess but being proud of his c4 idea.

@NM TheOldReb (if you're still Following this thread), if you look at the link posted by @lealfa, the chesstempo.com link, it shows Craig Woolcock as having an FIDE identificatin number, so he was definitely FIDE; doesn't make sense why you didn't see him on the FIDE ratings lists. Apparently his FIDE rating was 1872 at the time of his passing, and he was apparently as high as 1912 at one time (the equivalent of Expert-class, USCF). So yeah, the guy was pretty good. Illogical to quit one's job just to pursue chess, though (how would one make ends meet?). Presumably all that extra time in solitude contributed to his mental state when he finally cracked over chess losses.

I’ve had some bad streaks were it makes you feel stupid and useless and that the basis of those thoughts if you lose 3 in a row log off for an hour or 2
Nowhere900

You are right. Thank you for your clarity.

Makes sense, this game makes me want to off myself a lot of the time, the grip it has on the mind is toxic - makes you feel like dirt/less intelligent than an animal when you lose
