Anyone else going to super nats?
No, but do you need any help?
The organizers of the Super Nationals expect over 6000 participants, with close to 5000 entries already received 13 days before the event.
For perspective sake, I played in the very first National High School Championship, in New York City in 1969. It was a Bill Goichberg event and, surprisingly, 373 players showed up, which, I believe made it the largest event (up to that time) in the history of the USCF. John Watson, an expert from Nebraska won the title with 7 wins and one draw. There was only one master entered, Jon Jacobs, who was upset in an early round.
During the event, there was a rumor that Bobby Fischer was spectating. I spent 20 minutes away from my board "searching for Bobby Fischer," but never found him. An old woman was in the lobby of the Hotel Ballroom, claiming to be Larry Evans' mother, and sold me a new copy of Evans' "New Ideas in Chess," for 60 cents. She wanted $5.00 for a hard-cover copy of the recently released "My 60 Memorable Games," (Evans was editor/contributor), but I had already ordered the soft-cover version for $2.95, and didn't want to get gypped by some old lady.
Good luck to all who are playing in Nashville, and, amid all the excitement of being at the "Big Event," try to remember to focus at the chessboard.
