Surprised Emoticon, How?

My opponent accidentally moved their king forward and the immediately back. Obviously a mouse slip. They made a "surprised" emoticon appear on the screen. I know you can request to chat and then accept or deny to chat. But there was no request to chat. How do you make an emoticon appear that is different from chat? I have actually never chatted either, I am pretty focused when I play (even at a low level).
