Tactics rating steadily increases... then plummets

Hey all, so I've been doing the tactics here on the trainer for a bit now, and I have no idea how to explain what's happening to me. On June 3rd, I was rated 1247 for tactics. Ever since then I've been steadily climbing until June 11th when I hit 1414 (I did all 25 of my tactics every day). Ever since June 12th, my rating has been steadily dropping! Today, June 21st, I have a tactics rating of 1290. What the heck happened? I feel like I should be getting the answers to the puzzles but that it is just not clicking for me. I feel slower and less sharp. Has this happened to anyone? Any suggestions to get out of this tactical slump?

That has happened to me over and over. Some days I feel like a tactical genius, other days I can't find anything - I am missing mates in one, easy forks, etc.

I Just push through it - keep doing what I am doing, and know that things will resolve. The ideas that I have been learning the past two weeks will sink in, be assimilated, and then I can start upwards again.

Keep at it, and endure the slide. Then maybe take a break for a day or two, or three, and then back to it. Things will come around! Just hang in there!

Tactics as with all learned things takes time.  Even though you will study and improve, you will also see strecthes of decline.  Just keep studying, and work on improving your pattern recognition.  DONT get caught up in the rating.

Thanks for the encouragement both of you. I think a big mistake I made was being too focused on the ratings and I let that really shake me. Gotta focus more on learning from my mistakes instead of being so quick to try another puzzle in hopes of getting my rating back up.

Exactly!

Just like i tell me students.  You need to play the position, not the rating.

That happens to me. I got my tactics rating over 1200 and started pushing 1300, then it fell to 1100 and I seem to fluctuate between 1100 and 1200. I think I play the tactics when I have a headache or I'm tired, which hurts my performance. I'm sure I'll break through 1300 at some point. I love to take the time to look at the analysis board to understand the tactics a little better.

100-150 elo jumps  are not much at lower section.

Problems are sorted by members. Some puzzles are very hard for one type of players and very easy for another type of players. When you go up in rating it does not mean you will get harder ones. Yes you will, but not imidiately and not by just climbing 100 points more at lower section.

Keep focusing on solving them correctly, dont rush and keep learning and eventualyl you will be 300-400 points higher.

I can tell by experiece some problems are nightmare with like 10-30% pass rate at 1500 level and some 2100 rated problems are soo easy its unbelivable. Last night was watching GM Irina Krush solving 2450 rated problems and i must say i solved few of them pretty quickly... But next was some crazy 8+ checkmate sequence..

Sometimes I look at the comments section of a puzzle... Players boast because they have found the solution of a 2000 rated problem in less than 5 seconds!! And I think , "oh God , this one is the new Fischer , I found him at last"!! But when I take a look at their profile ... 1400-1500-1550...

So there is something wrong here , either with the players or with the Tactics Trainer!! In any case , don't give a penny about ratings!!

ChessOfPlayer

Those people guess the solution with little to no calculation because it feels correct to them mostly or they have seen it before.  Calculating that fast does not happen.

@chessofplayer ,

I don't know... There is a mate in 6 or 7 , with one or two difficult moves and they find it in 10 secs... with a 1500 rating!!! How can a 1500 player solve a 2000 puzzle in 10secs???

In a certain problem there was a combination from a GM game...which the GM did not find on the board!! But our 1500 super-GMs found in a flash!!!
