Talent...or devotion? A discussion of whether genius is made, or born.

Sometimes genius devotes itself to something and it ends up being rather noteworthy. In fact, you can't overlook it and are compelled to it's allure. We sometimes see and mention wasted talent. However, If we see talent was wasted, but we were never aware of the genius that didn't choose to dedicate him/her self, we rarely think of the person as a genius. We most often think if they had to work at it, then they weren't a genius, because things are effortless to geniuses. I completely disagree with that foolish notion. This is why.

Most things in life that are worth mentioning and desirable, require extreme expense, dedication or hard work and most likely in some combination of those. The restless, competitive human spirit, that is always striving to be better and to have more, has forced  even genius to manifest itself through hard work and dedication. Our defiant human nature, doesn't want us to make ourselves subject to those who are smarter than us.We never want to feel beneath anyone, nor think anyone should have anything more than us, without working for it, especially if we have to.

Very little in life is free and most of it isn't desirable if it is. So, if genius doesn't dedicate itself to something tangible, giving us a glimpse, we don't recognize it. I truly believe most geniuses who never seemed to amount to anything in the eyes of others, simply chose to live in the beauty of simplicity, deciding stresses they'd be forced through to prove themselves, didn't make trying that hard worth it.

When a genius is driven to the point that no price is too high to accomplish their goals and dreams, it is comparable to the rise of a perfect storm. In this day and age, I think it is rare a genius is dedicated to chess, having enough desire to prove they are the best.

From the reputation you can get, the lack of monetary compensation as compared with many other pursuits, the time, effort and stress required, and the history of people losing their minds, families, health, etc, it is no surprise to me that chess circles have these conversations. If chess were more lucrative and less attritious, I am sure you would see geniuses more often.

The reason I say that is, IMO chess is one of the better mediums, that isn't detrimental to one's life as compared with other pursuits, that are more compensatory in money, fame, adoration and etc, giving them the opportunity to share their genius. In fact, I think it is one of the driving forces behind many players who aren't a genius. Why be mediocre or risk failing at something more dangerous or risque, just to show your savvy ?

Nah.

Most things in life that are desirable aren't worth mentioning.

My son is worth mentioning and desirable to me, requires a good bit of expense, dedication and hard word. Most things in life that are good are probably less in number than the bad things that aren't worth mentioning or working for.

Both are needed to reach the highest levels. Devotion probably counts for more than natural talent... but devotion without talent can be very painful on a personal level.

Life is cool, man.  There's way more good shit than bad.

The simplest things can be the most beautiful.  Hell, I'm workin' a long way from home, the job's goin' poorly, and there are a bunch of assholes around, but I still don't fail to enjoy a nightly view of the moon with the clouds skimming across it, accompanied by a quiet breeze.

Y'h just gotta' try to be philosophical about wading through the cruelties of existence.

It's fate. So it doesn't matter if you study or not.

If it's fate, then it isn't up to you whether you study or not.

DrSpudnik

Study all you want, if you aren't to be a chessmaster, you are just wasting your time.

If it's up to fate, then it's out of our hands. If i am not to be a chessmaster, then i was fated to waste my time.

Hooray, you've self-actualized!! Laughing

CalamityChristie

those 32-line posts of 32 seconds "thought" should incur a muzzling ban.

If there was more good than bad, we wouldn't have to go to such lengths to get rids of all the crap we can't stand each day....

So you honestly believe everyone lives in a edgy, frantic state, constantly trying to change the situations they find themselves in? No one can rise above that?

How very optimistic.

Optimism is unwarranted. Evidence suggests otherwise.
