It may be unfair to compare old players vs. modern (Just as it is to compare professional athletes) because of the influence of technology, but the sad truth is, Carlson and Kasparov would mop up Fischer, Capablanca. etc. because modern players have a longer history of play to study from, learning from the likes of Fischer and Spassky, but even more so because of what computer analysis has done for today's game. If earlier player had the tools that we today can learn from, we'd have a different stroy no doubt, but it's hard to argue that the game has evolved with technology giving us stronger play now than ever before.
P.S. Carlson takes PEDs
Kasparov, Tal, Morphy(I personally think Tal was better than Fischer, just my opinion)
At least I'm not the only one who puts Tal up there with the best! +1

In 2005,[15] Sonas used Chessmetrics to evaluate historical annual performance ratings and came to the conclusion that Kasparov was dominant for the most years, followed by Karpov and Lasker. He also published the following list of the highest ratings ever attained according to calculations done at the start of each month:[16]

That's what makes him the best. How can you beat a guy who's cheating?

I have cynically answered best player threads that way also. You at least could have used an asterisk...

I don't know how Chessmetrics works. Maybe you can find out.
