The Art of War, by Sun Tzu

We are Kings commanding an army and Sun Tzu has been read by Warriors for years. Cut your enemy's supply lines while keeping yours open, ie back your pieces up, don't overextend yourself. Attack where your enemy is weakest. That's pretty obvious. Don't look at the news until you've played all your chess games for the day. I snuck that in on Sun Tzu, but you really shouldn't listen to the news and then try to play chess, you'll just be mad. Sun Tzu's principles can be used in many different areas of life. I read it in business school. I'll have to do a summary. Here's a review I found on the Internet. *************** Book Summary The Art of War, by Sun Tzu Book Rating by Shortform Readers: 4.8 (60 reviews) Successful victory during conflict requires more than just cunning and brawn. Whether you are involved in an individual conflict or are leading a group of people through a competition, the strategies required to prepare for and engage in battle are the same. The Art of War by ancient Chinese warrior and philosopher Sun Tzu provides the essential elements that must be considered to develop strategic conflict resolution tactics. Sun Tzu’s principles guide you through the steps required to become a competent leader and fighter. They teach you how to determine victory, when to engage in combat, and when to use intelligence and intimidation to dissolve conflict without confrontation. With these teachings, you'll understand how to read conflict and opponents to determine the best course of action.

... to determine the best course of action.

He who knows his enemy but doesn't know himself will suffer a defeat for each victory he wins.

There's no negotiating a Peace Treaty in Chess. You'll have to play the Art of War, which became Civilization, for that one. But I'm all for prisoner exchange.

Draw?

"The Thirty-Six Strategems of Lord Tan" is another good one.

Here is a sample:

When the enemy is too strong to be attacked directly, attack something they cherish. The idea is to avoid a head-on battle with a strong enemy, and instead strike at their weakness elsewhere.

King_Shark58

I taught Sun Tzu the art of shovel foo

I guess a draw is as close to a peace treaty as we get, but it's the two kings standing among a pile of corpses. 😁🙄😥

I practice tongue fu.

pcwildman

I can knock a man down with a 3" strike from my tongue. Move over Bruce Lee.

And the two kings are like, "Shall we head to the pub?"

mockbachess

Sun Tzu seemed obsessed about beheading his own soldiers to get obedience. Makes me wonder if we stop sacrificing pieces will the others simply refuse to move in future?

bad guys in the movie when they can't defeat the protagonist so they hold the side character hostage instead

We all know they will go on a 20 minute monologue before the protagonist shows up and kills the antagonist before he can kill the side character. And somehow they will put “the power of love” in this movie even if there was no romance

pcwildman

🤣🤣🤣

no. It is friendship. The villain never has friends because he is bad, and nobody wants to be friend with bad people.

Sun Tzu principles are sure great. Shame it's of no use to prevent your gf from dumping you, nor to help you for cooking. Oh, and I bet it also fails for job interviews.
