The Battle of Gaugamela

Has there ever been a chess game with moves comparable to the Battle of Gaugamela?

It was fought in 331 B.C. between Darius III of Persia and Alexander the Great.

If we agree on a few things, I'm quite sure that we can figure it out :

1) Alexander's charge on Darius through the centre is opening a central file and a checkmate attempt on the king

2) Darius' retreat is one of the options to a checkmate

3) Alexander's pull back is giving up the king hunt

4) Leonidas and his Spartans belong to another storyLaughing

The biggest obstacle to reproducing the Battle of Gaugamela is that Gaugamela was fought in a 3-dimensional world and chess battles are fought only in 2 dimensions. But if you've got some ideas let me know  Also, from our best historical records thus far, Chess was  not invented until about 1500 years ago.

Here is something that might interest you.  In an obscure palimpset from circa 1200AD, that was auctioned at Sotheby's back around 1997 for 2 million dollars, were the transcribed the mathematical writings of Archimedes.  It is now a documented fact that the inventor of the calculus is not Sir Isaac Newton.  The inventor so far as we know was a guy that was doing calculus 3,000 years before him.  One Archimedes of Syracuse (287BC - 212BC).

actually Gaugamela was fought in a 1-dimensional world as it was fought with only one of the three arms of the armed forces ( land, and not sea or air )....Laughing

Any chess games comparable to the Battle of Britain ?

  Bodhidharma,

We are talking 3-dimensional physics here, not branches of the armed services.  You know length, width and height.  Well 4 dimensions if you consider time the 4th dimension.

Or maybe your are putting me on. In that case,  A 1-dimensional world? Well, yes an interesting perspective for researching an ancient historical battle in a chess context. But a doctoral(PhD) or Masters(MA) in ancient Persian History, no.

Maybe a novel in the non-fiction ancient history genre, yes.  There is certainly alot of rich character material starting with Alexander The Great himself to bring to life in novel form.  Maybe if it is a great novel, the script writers and directors in hollywood will have something to work with to make a decent movie.  Instead of the bad movies they have made using well documented ancient historical texts.

Well, good luck with this guys.

the plan for the Battle of Gaugamela by Alexander the Great was based on a chess game played between Napolean and Fidel Castro.

I'm sorry, my history knowledge is maybe a little lacking.  Of the Macedonians or the Persians:  Who had the superior air-force again?

I find it amazing that such a brilliant military strategist as Napoleon always lose chess games to his generals. I mean...why didn't he use his air force ? Erik, it was a one-sided game between him and Castro coz the Cuban threatened him with nukes !

Your memory serves you well, TheGrobe - the Persians had the superior airforce but it was thwarted by the Macedonians guided missile umbrella.

ummmm... haven't you heard of leonardo divinci? the famous inventor? he invented flying objects WAY ahead of his time that certainly could have existed at this timeperiod.

No there couldn't have been aviation during 300 Bc. DaVinci lived around 1400 1500 during the renaiccence. It was possible to actually fly around the 18th century. And I think the first time flying was used in a war during the french revolution in  hot air balloon.

You moron, why do you think flying has to be done with airplanes??!!

I thought Leonard DaVinci was at his best in Catch Me If You Can.

It should be pointed out that, by the time of Gaugamela, Darius had already lost his queen (Stateira, also his sister) to his opponent (at the earlier battle of Issus). So not a lot of hope there.

But I do understand that Darius was working on jet propulsion and atomic weaponry before the Allied invasion...he just didn't have enough time to finish the projects.

Jet-powered, atomic elephants, anyone?

Erik, duh!, that was Leonardo DiCaprio, he experimented with kiting checks, not flying machines(except when he passed himself off as an airline pilot).Cool

No need to feel silly. Easy misconception. I believe Bush invaded Iraq looking for those Jet-powered, Atomic elephants. Could happen to anyone. Makes some great baked beans though, doesn't he.
