The issue with classical chess on Chess.com

I had an experiment going on a few months ago, where I made an account for the simple purpose of serious chess training. Every chess coach on Earth suggests playing long games and analyzing them thoroughly.

What I went on to find out, is that very few people play classical chess on Chess.com compared to its main rival, Lichess. While I was, during my experiment, a solid 1050-1070 rated chess player, I would only be matched against players in the 600-800 range, and very rarely find somebody in my own rating range. Not to mention that matchmaking took ages, and only in the 60 min time control could I find players, cause it literally would take like 15 minutes to find a 90+30 opponent. Due to lack of success in finding opponents, I switched my classical account over to Lichess, where I can find proper challenges in about 30-60 seconds, and shut down my Chess.com experiment.

Why do you guys think people play very little classical chess here, compared to Lichess?

"playing long games and analyzing them thoroughly." ++ Yes

"very few people play classical chess on Chess.com" ++ Yes

"rarely find somebody in my own rating range" ++ Play 15|10.

"find a 90+30 opponent" ++ It strains the eyes to stare at a screen for 4 hours.

"Why do you guys think people play very little classical chess here, compared to Lichess?"
++ Maybe the French have more patience than the Americans?

I play one day games nearly 99% of the time. I have no problem finding opponents to engage. I don't have to stay glued to the ipad for long periods of time. I get to contemplate moves longer and then make my mistakes!

Yeah no one plays long time controls on chess.com. When I want to play classical online, which was about three times in my whole life, I would go on lichess.

Yeah, that's my entire question, why is that your choice?

There are some clubs on site that play longer time controls, so joining one of them might make it easier to find opponents. As for getting low rated players, you can set your rating range to prevent that.

I play daily games on both sites. The ratings (if that is important to you) on L are generally higher than CC. That is due to an almost entirely different pool of players. Even though my L rating is 600-700 points higher than CC, i "win" more games there due to abandonment/time issues. That is a small frustration as winning a daily game on time is undesirable. Play them both to experience them and formulate your own opinion. There is no need to choose one and stop using the other. I enjoy them both. BTW, at my level(s) i've had no problem getting games with comparable opponents on either platform. Just set your range appropriately.

I’m aware of the rating range setting, however the amount of players within a decent rating range looking for slow games is so small, that I easily lose my patience and forget that I put out a challenge altogether by the time an opponent is found.

Different platforms may have distinct communities and cultures.

Note also that for " daily" chess, the players can make their moves as quickly as they like. There is no restriction on how fast you may move as long as you don't violate the daily time control. So a player and opponent can choose a daily time control, but play the game quickly if they so choose. Of course that begs the question of whether one can find opponents who are willing to play a quick game under a daily time control.
