The Kings point Value

I'm sure all of you are aware of the point values assigned to chess pieces. If you're not then here they are:

Pawn = 1 pt

Bishop = 3 pts

Knight = 3pts

Rook = 5pts

Queen = 9pts

Generally people say the king is either infinite points or is simply invaluable since losing the king loses you the game. Imagine if the point of the game was changed so that losing the king was not the end of the game, imagine a piece that could move like the king or just imagine an end game when checkmate isn't really much of a threat; what is the point value of the king then? Suppose a position where one king is unable to help the position and the other king is free to contribute. How many points would the side with the active king be up. My gut instinct says the king is more valuable then the knights and bishops but less valuable then rooks putting the king at 4 points (of course point values are position dependent but lets try to keep the discussion as general as possible). I thought a discussion of this would be interesting

Good instincts, its value is between a rook and minor piece. I think Lasker gave it 4 also.

I think 4 is the appropriate designation for a king, and I think that would also be appropriatein a game where the king could be captured. In an endgame it's very useful and can move very deliberately to get into tight positions. Definitely not as versatile as a rook but arguably better situationally, especially up close with few pieces, than a knight/bishop. Amen happy.png

I agree with 4. it's basically just a slower queen, so a little less than half the value works. in addition, it's possible to checkmate with just two kings, assuming one of the two kings is just a normal piece, so I think it should be worth more than a bishop or knight, because you can't checkmate with just a bishop and a king (like king from normal chess, that can't move into check and you lose if it's taken/mated) or just a knight and a king.
