The Most Popular Chess.com Variant is...

A month ago, I made a google form: What is the best Chess.com variant? (In this google form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdxHarxZ5qqRIuPJUVrp2E0uXW4cwllRpADTKLxMkal8kd2A/viewform?usp=sf_link ) and it got ??? votes. (You can still vote on it, I will update this forum every week)

(P.S, try to find the number of votes based on the percentages I put down)

(P.P.S, this is only variants on the variant page, excluding things like crazyhouse and chess960)

My results are in this forum, in which I will give my personal opinions on every variant, and a rating for every variant.

Unpopular Variants:

#14: Runner Up: Sideways Pawns and Torpedo: 0% each.

Personally, I was slightly surprised by these results, but not by much. These variants are fun, but they only have to do with pawns. There isn't much change in the game, although there are many more tactics, like discovered attacks with pawns or early promotion.

Sideways Pawns: 4/10

Torpedo: 4/10

(Please note: My opinions are just opinions, I don't mean to offend anyone.)

#13: Chaturanga, Blindfold, Capture Anything, and No Castling: 1.9% each.

Chaturanga has many different types of pieces, but due to the fact that pawns can only move one space on their first move (And all of their other moves), and that the queen and bishop are heavily nerfed along with the pawn, the game is just slightly boring.

Chaturanga: 3/10

Blindfold is tricky. I cannot play for more than 10-20 moves, and it looks like other people can't either (Except maybe professionals), so that is why it's low rated. It still is a good variant, it just is extremely hard.

Blindfold: 6/10

Capture anything is just dull, it usually makes the game much more longer, making opening traps impossible to checkmate with. However, there are some discovered check tactics that are interesting, but the rest of the game doesn't make up for it.

Capture Anything: 2/10

No Castling is just boring. Just artificially castle and the variant has no more changes. I was extremely surprised that it didn't have any votes.

No Castling: 1/10

More Popular Variants:

#9: Giveaway and Fog Of War: 5.7% each.

Fog Of War is my favorite Chess.com variant. There is tons of strategy, like not taking some pieces that look free and only capturing with minor pieces (Which adds a layer of bluffs in FOW). There is as much strategy in FOW as regular chess, maybe even more.

Fog Of War: 9/10 (The bluffing is annoying sometimes with certain types of players, which I won't say which type of.)

Giveaway (Antichess on another website which I cannot type the name of, but you all know it already.) is just a regular Chess variant. Giveaway has a good amount of strategy but is slightly dull to me because it removes many tactics from the game, like forks, skewers, and basically any tactic that wins material or positional advantages. I'd rate this a........

Giveaway: 5/10

#7: King Of The Hill and Horde: 7.5% each.

KOTH, or King Of The Hill, is a variant which controlling the center is key, so it is a lot like modern chess (And the opposite of hypermodern.) There isn't much more to be said, except that you get easy wins from people who castle or bring their king out too early, so I enjoy it.

King Of The Hill: 7/10

Horde: Horde is slightly dull for White because all of your moves are pawns, and because you have to defend and not capture most of the time, but pawn storms are fun. As black, you have to make some wise decisions such as: Should I sac my Bishop to win 2 pawns and later gain a pawn or shouldn't I? This introduces a new element into the game if you are black, and makes the game much more interesting for you. I prefer playing as White, though.

Horde: 7/10

Popular Variants:

These variants are the top 5, and everyone who is reading this forum probably has played them many times.

#5: Atomic: 9.4%

Atomic is just.... biased. White has a major advantage, and black only has a small number of moves that can defend, or he gets a forced checkmate in 1. Most games never make it past the endgame, and the ones that do end in the middlegame. Any games in the endgame will usually end in a draw, like a K vs R endgame. I think that Stockfish gave a major plus for white in Atomic.

Atomic: 1/10

#4: Automate, 3-Check, and Bughouse: 13.2% each.

3-Check has a lot of opening traps, and beginners will fall for them, such as in the variant of Atomic. For the exact same reasons, I don't like 3-Check much, but a plus side is that there are more moves that can defend against most traps. Another plus is, most games end in the middlegame, and opening traps aren't very common.

3-Check: 3/10

Automate is extremely fun. Some strategies counter other strategies of placing your pieces, and you have to place to pieces based on how the opponent places his. It is best to usually place more minor pieces, but your strategy can range from all queens to all knight and a pawn brigade.

Automate: 8/10

Bughouse has a lot of strategies, and chatting is a major strat in Bughouse. However, if your teammate isn't playing well, they can carry you down with them, which is very annoying sometimes. Bughouse is a lot like an online team game, where your teammates also have to be good.

Bughouse: 4/10

#1: The Most Popular Chess.com Variant:

(Take your guesses now!)

(Oh wait you already know what it is)

(So, I'll reveal it.)

#1: 4-PLAYER CHESS (Try to figure the percentage in the comments based on the fact that I showed you the percentage of the other variants, and that all of the percentages added up equal 100%. The person who guesses how many votes were cast gets 20 cheers, and the person who guesses what percentage of votes 4-PC got gets 10 cheers.)

4-Player Chess (Or 4-PC as it is known) is the MOST popular Chess.com variant!

I personally don't prefer 4-PC because of its length, and most games will take 30+ minutes unless you play without an increment, which then the game will be too quick to be thinking about everything. The thing is, there is a lot of teamwork, and very quick checkmates, so there is a very big mix of strategy.

4-Player Chess: 7/10

I hope you enjoyed the list of my opinions on the most popular chess variants!

(P.S, put any suggestions about what to change in the comment section, if you disagree, also put that in the comment section.)
