Once you get rid of the pawn, it's game over for whoever is playing stone wall

at your level i'm not sure if the queens gambit is common but if it isn't then 2...dxc4 3.e3 lines can catch people off guard.

the sicilian as black is really good as well.

Which pawn?

I will remark I find it indeed unpleasant to face, so I often race to trade the light square Bishop off early, then the game becomes more survivable.

The Stonewall setups are indeed powerful against lower-rated players.  It provides an easy and thematic attacking scheme, and if the other side just marks time you can win almost by default.  As a bonus, it secures the centre, preventing central breaks and counter-attacks.  The main disadvantage is of course the weak central square on e4, but most lower-rated players don't really know how to take advantage of this fact, and this can lead to a risk free advantage.

Though I don't believe I've ever played it with White, the Stonewall Dutch was my main choice against 1.d4 for about a year, and I have a solid dozen wins or so all in the exact same way.

I never found a similar set-up against 1.e4.  It is much easier for White to break in the center with d4 and get active play, so Black needs a different approach.  The closest thing I came up with was the Scandinavian, but I was never as happy with this as the Stonewall.

I don't like to defend against the stonewall and play every chance to avoid it or break up the pawns. I have played it with the Bottvinnik system as white with success, but the games get boring to me after a while. But whatever you feel comfortable with and enjoy by all means enjoy it. Good luck.

What many of you may not have noticed even at levels drifting into Intermediate is that "stonewall and mods" (*London we're looking at you!*) is also something to contend with for players playing Black using ...g6 systems because then you take the game to a higher level. Instead of going for h7 turbo sacs, you pick up on the fact 2/3 of the Black Indian systems rely on a ...e5 break, and the "anchor pawn" is sitting on e3 and not e4, so the Black player really has to know the stuff to be ready for either more Averbakh type setups or smashed open positions.

The Torre, London, Bird's, and Larsen's openings all have the same basic setup as the Stonewall attack.  Against e4, I could suggest the Alekhine's as the attack against the d4 pawn is easy to play.  These were the openings I played when beginning.

Sure, hence why I often played early ...c5 and ...e5 stuff , the second with a couple pieces behind it, then it just becomes some kind of middlegame with "chess".
